It’s time to end the entire concept of “food insecurity” and all the government jobs that follow from it.

That and funding for “hunger,” as in those ads you’ll see claiming things like ‘1 in 3 children in the US face hunger!’

I once went to one of those org’s website and finally found their definition of “facing hunger”: if a child, when interviewed, said that at least once a month they were unsure about the timing of their next meal, even if they received that meal, or if they ever felt hungry and didn’t have anything to eat, or if they’d still felt hungry at the end of a meal (like every teenager ever), or if they’d not eaten a lunch during the school day-regardless of cause- yep, they’d ‘faced hunger!!’.

So yeah, an obese kid has an appropriately sized meal and is still wanting more: That’s hunger! Give us funding!
Some kid skips eating get more time to play football at lunch with his friends: Oh noes! Hunger!!

I am not defending her. What she said was vile and needs to be rejected. However...

I decided to check out the Camp Mystic website. I have a granddaughter and having her spend time at a Christian summer camp for girls was appealing to me.

It was a bit unusual to see nothing but white girls in the scrolling pictures on their website. Refreshing, maybe, but unusual.

I started clicking around and found archive photos of campers from previous years. The camp was closing in on 100 years old, so their are a lot of archived photos.

The cabins have cute names - Chatter Box, Tumble Inn, etc. - and they photograph the girls assigned to each cabin as a group, like a lot of class pictures or something you would see in a yearbook. I must have looked at over a hundred photos. Nobody but white girls.

Now, I don’t mean no black girls...I mean nothing but white girls...no Asians, no Hispanics, just smiling white girls as far as the eye can see.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying such a thing shouldn’t exist - I am all for freedom of association - but the fact that such a place does exist in this day and age is surprising.

I checked out the application to attend. You must create an account to apply...okay. You must state that you are the child’s legal guardian...hmmmmm. Then comes the “How did you hear about us” question. Your choices are “Family” or “Friend” or “Other”. In the first two you have to specify who referred you. If you choose “Other” you have to specify what “Other” led you to apply, but I get the feeling that those that put “Other” don’t go very far in the selection process. There are also “Grandmother Attended” and “Mother Attended” as options.

It has been reported that LBJ’s daughters and granddaughters have attended this camp. The granddaughter heir of the Hunt fortune was one of those who died. One of the Bush daughters was a counsellor in the summers between her college years. The list of connected alumni is long.

While I don’t agree with this black woman’s anger, I can understand where it comes from. She, nor anyone in her family, would ever attend Camp Mystic.

It is a private business and they can use whatever criteria they like.

My wife is a multiple camp Mystic attendee, she is 4th generation Parkie as in HP in Dallas one of the Park cities. They lost a number of children on the 4th. It’s big news in DFW as some influential families lost children. The rate for 30 days at Mystic is $4000+ per child it is not for the middle class at all. That said anyone who has the cheddar to pony up 4500 plus for a 30 camp stay AND has the pedigree to get past the years long waiting list is welcome it’s the pedigree they are jealous of.

I do not agree that her anger is justified. I can see where it comes from.

If you have convinced yourself that outside forces - in this case white people - are the root of all your troubles, then a camp where rich white people send their precious daughters would be a target for envious hatred.
