He remembered John Steinbeck visiting the migrant worker camp doing research to write “The Grapes of Wrath.” “He sure did get it down right,” Rogers wrote.
Yep… total commie. As was Pete Seeger.
I recall a funny story about Seeger. He made some song back in 1941 about keeping the US out of Europe's war. All the commies “opposed” the war and even any aid to the British. That's because Stalin wanted to see Hitler wipe out the British as the last free nation in Europe. He figured after Hitler got rid of them, then he could go after Hitler. Well Seeger, singer/songwriter that he was, made this anti war song and distributed it to all the record shops in New York City. A day or so later, Hitler attacked Russia and suddenly Seeger was running all over the city “ recalling” his own record. He didn't want anyone to hear it then.
seeger was always a damn phony. He didn't really give a damn about any of his “ causes.” It was always about Communism.
Revered Horton Heat
Yeah.
Rodgers and Carter family stand way above.
I met the Dirt Band, very cool guys.
You are kind of leaving out Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper, and others.
Coincidentally this was the same policy of the U.S. Communist Party.
“And he wrote the perfect country western song!”
And if you called out for him to sing that at a concert, he would walk off stage, guaranteed.
That was Western. As opposed to Country.
+1 for knowing John Prine was in on that. He was a big favorite of ours.
Lots of American Leftists were pro-Nazi until Hitler went into Russia in 1941. After all the Nazis were Stalin’s allies from the dismemberment of Poland until the Nazi invasion of the USSR in late Spring 1941.
Yep… Good ol Woody… he was not some kindly folk singer. He was a rotten to the core commie bastard who would have gladly sent millions of people to the executioner if it forwarded the revolutionary cause. No different than todays commies.
