I've been sleepy behind the wheel in the middle of the day before.

I agree. I am not going to post a speculation on what happened, but I do have my suspicions. I've been groggy on a few occasions during the day. Usually it is after being out in the sun all day and making a somewhat lengthy road trip home. I use to go on Canadian fishing trips of 1K+ miles. The most dangerous times weren't going up north, but going back south after the fishing trip was over. The adrenaline has worn off and the sun/weather has taken its toll. On one trip before our gang called it quits, an older fishing buddy that owned the car said he could continue driving after a couple hours of driving. Since it was his van nobody really pitched a bitch. I was the youngest in the group and fortunately happened to be the "pilot" monitoring in the front seat. At some point he fell a sleep and I caught it and grabbed the steering wheel to save the day.

Bumbles don’t crash, THEY BOUNCE. He may have bruised a bit of adipose tissue, but he survives to gorge again.
