It’s an American things as well. Although the Constitution does not say how long, beyond saying a reasonable limit, a person can be detained, the practice across the contiguous United States is 72 hours. Although in California, they mandate 48 hours.

Interestingly if you declare any kind of suicidal/homicidal thoughts/actions the law is you're put in a ''secure holding unit'' for a mandatory 72 observation period. No if ands or buts , not even God himself can get you out of that. And the more of a fuss you put up, the longer you stay.
