I finally told them there was 30 people living in our one room house. then it went down hill from there. good times.

The OP obviously didn’t respond to their form, so the response by Census - given that responding to ACS is a matter of law (thank your asshat congress critters) - is to send people to the door.
I had no idea it was an annual, ongoing data vacuum, the only time I’ve seen one being in conjunction with the 2010 census (and they sent someone to my door, too, but got sent packing).
Yes, same jury duty scam. They texted a picture of a warrant that was total BS. Insisted that I read it out loud. Scanned it and thankfully did not read it out loud. I hope others don’t. They are likely recording, and there is a potential they could use recordings with AI to impersonate people.
When I did a reverse lookup of the calling number, it said it was 'unassigned'.

All you owe the census is your name and how many people live in the house. That’s what we put on the census form. We had some dingbat woman come to the door years ago with her little clip board. We told her she was trespassing and to leave. She stood out in front of our house on the street for awhile and finally left.

I never answer a call from someone unless I positively know the caller. All else goes to voicemail.

We got a census questionnaire years ago and we only filled out minimal information, basically our age and not much more.
The law only says the census requires minimal stuff. The extra and the threats around not answering more, aren’t supported by law.
The government never sues because it would lose in court and then there would be a precedent.
At that point I stopped the main guy and told him he cannot legally represent himself as working with the utility, even wearing electrical safety gear, to sell his own solar solution. I told him I wanted his lying butt forever off of my property or I would call the police. He started getting uneasy as I spoke back and by the time I finished, he and his friends were running away to their car and I didn't see them again in our neighborhood.
We have gotten many solar sales people coming by, but this group took the cake with their approach and words.
I chuckle over that, to this day.

If I don’t know you and you don’t have an appointment I won’t answer. My ex-BiL was the victim of a push in robbery. He couldn’t get to his weapon and they tied him and his daughters up. They were lucky they only got robbed, nothing worse.
Probably a new fraud to gather information for later use by breaking into Your Home and/or ID Theft.
Might want to contact Your Local PD/Sheriff Office and ask them to do a vetting process and see what comes up.
“you don’t answer your door?”. There’s absolutely NO compelling reason to answer a knock on the door of YOUR house if you choose to NOT answer it. Has nothing to do with being “afraid of everyday life” but everything to do with choosing how YOU conduct yourself and Your OWN time and energy. I can’t imagine anyone attempting to use GUILT TRIPPING by false accusation by posting someone refuses to answer the door because they are in fear of the outside world. That assessment is about half past dumb. This is REAL life. Get one.
If you can’t handle the uncertainties of answering your own front door, then don’t, it would have been seen as bizarre 50 and 60 years ago.
Decades ago when I lived in an apartment, a gal came to my door dressed as a cowgirl in a real short skirt, asking if I was so and so.
