At some point, you have to trust what is going on. Or not.
There is a lot of hand wringing and paranoia.
If you don’t want to answer your door and talk to strangers…then don’t.
I remember being a door to door salesman in 1982. I loved these days. It wasn’t too hot and people were outside a lot. It made my job a lot easier and more pleasant. If someone did not want what I was selling…that was fine. I just moved on to the next door. It was a numbers game. Getting into arguments with folks simply took time away from me.
No, don’t use the word homophobe, I just can’t imagine a person who won’t answer his own door, even for uniformed cops, it must be weird to be in your house hoping the stranger will just quit knocking and go away while you wait it out, it seems timid.
I live in a very low crime neighborhood, but I’d never answer the door to a stranger. I use a window just out of arm’s reach. High ground advantage, and they don’t see the shotgun at all.
I’m a rather tiny female and as such, I was taught to take extra precautions.
“””American Community survey conducted by U.S. Census”””
You are correct. ACS was begun in 2005 and people were convinced that they had to respond. At the beginning something like 95% responded to ACS.
Now that people have become much wiser regarding Big Government sticking their nose into everything, the response rate has dropped dramatically.
Best thing to do is to simply ignore the ACS canvasser.
I don’t wait anything out. We just boldly go about our business and ignore them.
Hell, I’ve driven into the house and seen them on the front porch, and just close the garage door as they call out.
You confuse absolute indifference with something else.
Indeed. Happened to me a few months ago.
Caller claimed I missed jury duty and judge had issued a warrant for my arrest.
They had lots of information, they spoofed the local PD phone number.
Started asking me about paying my bail… Wanted me to meet them.
Curiously, they were asking me to meet them at the police station.
These people are playing a dangerous game, I would have emptied my carry weapon into their chest.
I DESPISE SCAMMERS!!!
> I’ve had more sophisticated scammers calling lately. <
Same here. I don’t hang up, though. Instead I talk to them, and politely try to answer their questions. I might even ask them a few questions of my own.
I do all that in Hungarian. Funny…but they always hang up before I do.
Side point #1: Some people think that talking to them puts you on a live phone number list. That might well be true! But in my experience, my “foreign man” routine reduces the calls over time. Your mileage may vary.
Side point #2: I suppose I’ll be in trouble the day a Hungarian scammer calls me.
RE: have to trust or not.
I will not.
Many, many stories like this. These are two from my state.
FOX 2 , October 17, 2024.
...The second man accused of posing as a DTE worker has been charged in the home invasion and murder of a 72-year-old Rochester Hills resident.
Joshua Zuazo, 39, of Dearborn, has been charged in the October 11 crime in which Hussein ‘Sam’ Murray was beaten to death and his wife assaulted and tied up, the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office announced Thursday.

Three who claimed to be utility workers robbed Grosse Pointe Farms resident at home
Detroit
March 16, 2025. CBS Detroit.
Three men distracted and robbed a Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, resident on the pretext of being utility workers and seeking entrance to the home, local police said.
The victim was an elderly person who has dementia, Grosse Pointe Farms police added in their report.
” don’t hang up, though. Instead I talk to them, and politely try to answer their questions. I might even ask them a few questions of my own.”
If they catch me, I ask them what they are wearing and tell them I think they’re sexy.
It goes downhill from there.
I’ve received ACS surveys in the mail twice. They went straight into the trash, never heard any more about them.
That’s not “being afraid of everyday life;” it’s having better things to do with your time than listening to an annoying salesperson trying to push you to spend money on something you’re not interested in.
What would you do if a woman knocks on your door at 2 AM screaming my boyfriend/spouse is trying to kill me?
> I’d never answer the door to a stranger. I use a window just out of arm’s reach. <
I don’t have that handy window. So I did a little carpentry work, and made a floor brace for my front door. If I feel the need to open my front door, the brace will stop the door after two inches or so.
I can remove the brace if the person is a friend of mine. If not, he just ain’t getting in unless he can squeeze through a two-inch opening.
And then he’ll have to talk to my friend Mr. Colt.
I would deal with it, and help her if it were true, or deal with whatever the situation turned out to be.
You take charge of whatever is at your door, if you want to send them away you do, but you don’t cower inside the house not knowing who it is or what it is about.
Yes, this is legit, or likely. Happened to me recently. They can come around and survey whenever. Some law or something.
Nope.
You are a trusting soul. No way would I open the door at 2 AM for someone I don't know....
I refuse to fill out census forms.
I don’t care if it’s “the law”.
If they want to count us just get that info from the IRS.
Once had a man knock at the door. He was canvassing those of us that didn’t mail back the form or do it online. So they already know who we are and where we live.
Typical bureaucratic BS.
Anyway I said to him I understood he was just earning money and only said 2 adults live here.
He then tried to get the other stupid questions answered. I dont believe the census has legal authority to ask beyond a count.
He started with “How many bathrooms?”. Stupid. I told him to go to the apartment office and ask them and shut the door.
But I was happy to inform him how many guns I owned.
So….don’t. I am sorry you live in a shit hole. My town is very safe.
