Wife used to cut my hair until her Alzheimer’s got in the way. Now it’s to the local shop. Patricia cuts my hair and did my wife’s until she died. During the pandemic BS Patricia drove the 6 miles from town to our house and cut our hair. She refused to take a Franklin so I gave her the usual $50 for two cuts and stashed a $100 in the back of her car when she wasn’t looking. Later she asked about it and I told her I didn’t want her to go out of business. Got about as sincere a ‘Thank You’ as I’ve ever heard.

I’m retired Air Force. When I go on base to pick up 90 day supply of meds I stop by the barber shop.

When you’re in the chair be careful one doesn’t say “I see you again with rival you be sorry.”

Two times Dean Martin got a close shave from a woman.

Covid put such a big dent in the barber shop trade, I do not think it will ever recover. When you simply could not go to the barber during the plague time, many of us found alternate ways to manage. In my case, my wife became an excellent barber after a few unfortunate mischances. It made no difference then because we were not going out anywhere anyway. I do miss the hot towels and the neck massage, but not enough to go back at today’s prices.

RE: black barbershops.

I am probably the one person here who has seen Barbershop, Barbershop II: Back in Business, Barbershop III” the Next Cut. And the spinoff Beautyshop with Queen Latifa.

Good scene in Beautyshop. The women were discussing how they hate having bikini wax done. One said “I always leave a place to help my man find his way to my doorway to Heaven.” Other stylist: “In your case that’s a revolving door.”

When I briefly lived in Gulf Breeze, FL we had a great barbershop nearby. It was a pleasure going there. Otherwise, Supercuts and the like is exactly where I go because its close, its relatively cheap and its convenient. My hair is not difficult to cut. I get the same cut every time and they know what it is as soon as I give them my phone number. Its pretty tough to screw it up.

*IF* I had a good barbershop that was not too far away, then yes I would go there. I don’t have one. Other than that one barbershop the best one I’ve ever gone to is one older Vietnamese lady who cut hair. She was good, pleasant to talk to and she had a hand buzzer thing she would use to massage your shoulders, neck and scalp right after giving you a haircut. That felt great. More of them should do that. Supposedly massaging the scalp stimulates hair regrowth (that will never be a problem for me but it felt great).

It has been about 20 years since I had a barber cut my hair. About every three months my wife will give me a buzz cut and I am happy. In the grand scheme of things saving money on a haircut is not that big a deal, but it is a savings and I will take it.

From 1973, when I had to do it myself, using scissors and a toaster held up to a bathroom mirror (so I could see the back of my head), for a military inspection and no on base appointment were available, I’ve cut my own hair. If you’re not looking for a complicated do, and short hair is okay, all you need is a second mirror, scissors and a blade trimmer. (And a steady hand )

Hand mirror, bathroom medicine cabinet mirror, scissors and blade trimmer, and Bob’s your uncle. Doin’ it since ‘73.

Nothing’s changed as far as I can see. Barber shops are just like they were when I was a kid, except they have flat screen TV’s now. And the clientele is the same too.

Yep, they seem the same as the ones I've gone to for about 6 decades, all except the price. What a worthless article.

It’s known as a low maintenance scalp, and you’re a follicular minimalist.

I remember ours in several towns we lived in. The local one had two or three barbers and was always full of customers.
There was a door in the back which led to a pool hall we never got to go into.
Then One seat, one barber. Now empty. Pool hall is used for storage.
I now go to a different barber in another town. Usually lots of people in line getting fancy haircuts or beard trim. Some customers take as long as 45 minutes in the seat. I take an average of 10-15 minutes.

I’m a woman who usually tips 30-40% to stylists and/or manicurists. In return I expect prompt, cheerful service when I come in. The minute I sense complacency, I move on to a different shop. I’ve also been embracing my curly hair after decades of fighting it. I have to go to a shop specializing in curly girl hair in order to get a decent haircut. The struggle is real.

I have a standing appointment once a month with my barber for the last 15 years. Have to, he’s the best one in the area and is always booked up. He’s gay, but I have never had a better cut and shave and it is worth the $30 to me.
