In 1988 ‘I was at Sears automotive, a trusted name in automotive service’ 😁 (Ron White)
A woman came in and said her oil light was on.
She had an oil change at another place and had just left it.
Turned out they forgot to replace the oil....
I wonder how many times this happens?
The problem with changing my own oil on the bike is a) the receptacle and b) what to do with the waste oil. There used to be a sand filled box that one could use but I guess it was no longer environmentally friendly.
Now I have to pay $20-$30 for a Harry Homeowner pan and drop all of it off at an auto parts store so they can recycle.
Pits were unsafe?
I could be guaranteed finding scorpions down there in South Miami.
Mercedes, Volvo, Saab all use evacuators via the dipstick hole. Volvo even puts it canister filter on top of the motor in the front you pop the hood and it’s right there. My Saab nor Volvo ever had it’s drain plug pulled always evac via vacuum and the dipstick hole which is always the lowest portion of the pan. It’s boomer FUD that some how you leave oil behind and that’s going to kill the engine. My Saab had 150,000+ miles at 30 psi overboost levels when I sold it to a college kid. The S40 had 236K when I sold it after the AC crapped out and the S60 was at 180K when it got replaced by a Model 3 Tesla. None of those cars ever had it’s drain plug pulled. The evac has a tank with QT and Liter marks you can clearly see it took 5 or whatever Qts out. It’s fine dry once the vacuum gets done sucking it.
Story short skip the quick drain plugs get a prograde evac with all the various tips the manual will tell you what your car needs to get it bone dry.
I bought a pretty nice truck that made it 20 something miles after the quicky lube forgot to put the oil in it and finally put some in after it started knocking but not in time to prevent a rod from making a guinea pig size hole in both sides of the block.
The most important thing when draining your vehicle oil is to let all the dirty nasty oil drain out.
The problem starts at places like jiffy lube and others when they unscrew the drain plug and let it drain for like 2 or 3 minutes. The problem is you still have nearly half a quart of dirty oil left in the engine.
When I drain my oil on my vehicles I let them drain for over 30 minutes, sometimes nearly an hour I’ll let it drain while I do other things.
This is why I never have anyone else do my oil. No way!
We always duped the old oil around the fence posts to prevent rot. The wood would soak up the oil.
I agree about the oil change. I am 63 and I am not ever crawling under a car again.
