The actual title of the article is correct.
You’re welcome.
I've heard it pronounced by senators in the Foreign Affairs Committee as Tur-KEE-a.
I saw someone open a seal one time, used a hammer, it was up in Canada...
The actual title of the country in English is Turkey.
Name change request denied.
You’re welcome.
1100 year old olive oil? I’m thinking that it’s gotta be rancid. I hope they publish their findings. Maybe try it on some crackers…
Nobody cares but you....Sheesh!
From this day forward, you are hereby FLT-stubborn-as-a-mule.
Do you just roll over and accept it every time somebody else insists you change the name of something? You good with Biden changing the names of various bases and replacing them with names approved by the wokesters? You good with no longer calling it BC and instead calling it "Before the Common Era ie BCE" because non Christians came to the West and started whining about our dating system?
I'm not.
No more stubborn than those who insist we change what we've traditionally called things. Are you OK with calling yourself a "US American" and going along with whining South Americans who claim "But But But.....weeeeee're *Americans* too....sniffle"? Nevermind that "American" is a nationality. Nevermind that we've called our nationality that and have been universally known as that for literally hundreds of years. Nevermind that there is only one country in the world with the word "America" in its title. Nope! They insist we change now so we all just have to roll over and go along with it....right?
I worked a lot in South America in the 70s and they are passionate they are Americans. I made the chauvinistic mistake of saying "I am an American" and got an earful. I remember that 50 years later. Who are we to deny what people want to be called? (except, of course, for pronouns and trannies -- that's where I draw the line).
As you well know, the name "America" derives from Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci, who, in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, mapped parts of the New World’s coastlines. Unlike Christopher Columbus, who believed he’d reached Asia, Vespucci argued these lands were a distinct continent.
In 1507, German cartographer Martin Waldseemüller published a map naming the new lands "America" in Vespucci’s honor, applying it FIRST to what is now South America. The name later extended to the entire landmass, including the northern continent.
So South American was "America" first! We stole the name "America" from the South Americans.
The problem is unlike say European, "American" IS an actual nationality. That's not new. That's not something that was just invented to cause offense. That has been the case for HUNDREDS of years. NOW WE are supposed to change just because THEY got their noses out of joint about it? HELL NO.
I tell them "you are FROM the Americas, but you are NOT an AMERICAN. That is MY nationality - NOT YOURS. I don't dictate to you what you call your nationality, kindly extend me the same courtesy. There's nothing "chauvinistic" about saying you are an American. You are. That's what people from this country have always been called. That's been universally recognized.
Who are we to deny what people want to be called?
In this case, they are trying to turn a GEOGRAPHIC designation into a nationality...one that is already taken.
We stole the name "America" from the South Americans.
"America"/"the Americas" referred to the entire landmass. It was the geographic name for the place. We did not steal that as a nationality from anybody. Remember, we were the first independent country in the Western Hemisphere. We remain the only country with the word "America" in its title. We've been known as "Americans" right from the very start. It is THEY who insist WE change something - not the other way around. It is THEY who are trying to blur the lines between the geography and a distinct nationality....which is OURS. Whenever they try that with me I explain that it is "No bueno. Amigos." You are FROM the Americas. I however am an American. You are not.
They're always quick to insist that (pick one) IS indeed their nationality. So they don't want to give up theirs. They just want to claim mine too.
No.
They know perfectly good and well that that is OUR nationality. This IMO, is just a bunch of envy/butt hurt toward America because its big and strong and rich and overshadows them. Its a deliberate attempt to step on our toes. They think they're being oh so clever. They're not.
