Where did you get that story from? It sounds very fishy, especially since the KKK had been around for almost 50 years !

At first, Klans during the Reconstruction period did not burn crosses. The idea was introduced by Thomas Dixon Jr. in his novel, The Clansmen. He took it from an old Scottish custom known as the Crann Tara, used to declare war. It also called all clan members to defend a certain area. Most of the KKK’s rituals were Scottish in origin; the group saw Medieval Europe as morally pure and white. Ten years after Dixon’s book, D.W. Griffith directed The Birth of a Nation, the movie version of Dixon’s novel.[1]
Cross burning in the KKK did not really start until the early 1900s. Its purpose was to intimidate, despite the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in 2003. The case was called Virginia v. Black. The state of Virginia passed a law saying that any cross burning would be taken as an attempt to intimidate a person/group of people. The Supreme Court decided that cross burning was not meant to intimidate, and was an act of free speech, ruling the law unconstiutional.

It fit in well as a light source for nightime filming. Cross burning became more common after the film.
The movies would have you believe the Klan was only against blacks. In fact they have quite a history and were against a lot of things. Many non whites were lynched. The Klan was even active in nw ia for a time. We have a family story of a relative allowing an organization meeting on the hillside for our local town.
correction, many non blacks were lynched by the klan. my memory was about half. A friend had a family story of lynching of his ancestor in southern iowa.
A lot of our “history” is through the movies and media. Understand that.
While it sounds good and the states offer incentives, I suspect the talent and infrastructure for movie making is local to Hollywood: set designers, costumers, physical studios, post-production, distribution, etc. Quite a bit to "lift" into another region.

50 years? You just proved to me you get your history from the movies.
Do these films SHOW the actual hangings? NO and neither do the ones about blacks.
Well, when I went to school, FACTUAL HISTORY was taught, there are many FACTUAL books written about this, so you’re using personal experience to attempt to write a broad brushed opinion.
Yes, BIRTH OF A NATION was sort of based on THE CLANSMEN. So what? BOTH WERE WORKS OF FICTION and also served as PROPAGANDA spreading outlets.
Prior to that year, there was NO KKK!
The KKK did NOT spring up FULL BLOWN, immediately upon the freeing of the slaves/the end of the that war. As a matter of FACT, some ex-Confederates DID form "gangs", afterwards, GANGS WHO WENT AFTER WHITE NORTHERNERS, AS WELL AS BEING BANK, TRAIN, AND STAGE COACH ROBBERS! Ever hear of the JAMES GANG?
Have you ever heard of Quantrill's Raiders?
THE CLANSMEN was written in 1905, BIRTH OF A NATION was mad in 1915! The book was written FORTY YEARS AFTER THE END OF THE WAR; the movie was filmed FIFTY YEARS AFTER THE END OF THE WAR! Remove a few years for the actual setting up of the KKK, which was started in 1967, by Nathan Bedford Forrest!
Ergo, my math is 100% correct as are all of my FACTS!
??
Around Where?
nw ia??
