And party lines have come back. Most cell phones are party lines for the govt to listen in on, track your whereabouts, see what pictures you’ve taken and see what you’ve bought.

My gr-gr-grandfather went to work for a battery company around 1885 or 1890 in Germany. He was a salesman and a field engineer fixing things. Batteries then were used in city trams, boats and telegraph, soon to be used in ubiquitous telephones. Business was booming. He got assigned to the eastern region in Danzig and ran the company’s factory’s there. Then he struck out on his own, built his own factories and became quite wealthy. He built a very fine house in the well-to-do Langfuhr district and continued doing well until WW II hit. Their house was only a couple miles from Danzig Bay where Polish Navy warships were attacked by German Luftwaffe aircraft in Sept. 1939. It was the first naval-air battle of World War II and they had a front-row seat. They stayed in the house throughout the war until the invading Soviets evicted them in 1945. My gr-gr-grandmother had passed, but gr-gr-grandfather and his sister walked back to western Germany. He died the year I was born, 1951.
