Edith Mary Tolkien, born Edith Mary Bratt, was the wife of renowned author John Ronald Reuel Tolkien. Born on January 21, 1889, in Birmingham, Edith was the daughter of Frances Fannie Bratt, a single woman from a family of shoemakers. It is presumed that her father was Alfred Frederick Warrilow, a paper merchant, though her mother never revealed this to Edith.
Raised by her mother and cousin Jenny Grove, Edith’s life took a turn when her mother passed away in 1903, leaving her under the guardianship of family lawyer Stephen Gateley. He sent her to Dresden House School in Evesham, where she developed her musical talents, particularly in piano, aiming to become a concert pianist or piano teacher.
In 1908, Edith met Ronald Tolkien, who, along with his brother Hilary, had moved into the boarding house where she was living. Their shared loss of parents and the emotional needs they both had led to a natural connection between the two, and a romance soon blossomed.
However, their relationship was met with opposition from Father Francis Xavier Morgan, Ronald’s tutor, who disapproved of their relationship due to religious differences—Edith was Anglican, and she was also three years older than Ronald. Despite these obstacles, including Father Morgan’s efforts to separate them, the couple continued to meet in secret.
On Ronald’s 21st birthday, he wrote to Edith, confessing his love and asking her to marry him. To his surprise, she was engaged to another man, believing Ronald had forgotten her. However, after a reunion in Edith’s hometown, she broke off her engagement and accepted Ronald’s proposal.
Edith and Ronald married on March 22, 1916, at the Church of St. Mary Immaculate in Warwick, with the blessing of Father Morgan after Edith converted to Catholicism. They had four children: John, Michael, Christopher, and Priscilla.
Edith passed away on November 29, 1971, at the age of 82 in Bournemouth, following complications from gallbladder inflammation. She was buried in Wolvercote Cemetery in Oxford, where, two years later, Ronald was laid to rest beside her.
On their gravestone, the names “Beren” (for him) and “Lúthien” (for her) were inscribed, a tribute to the beloved characters from Tolkien’s legendarium.
I saw a few comments about the article elsewhere....they all said the same thing. Nothing satirical about it. That’s sad. Something I’d expect in Canada! No worries.
They wanted to go to the ocean, but did not want to go where it’s super busy, like Florida. They are staying in Brunswick, and it’s a nice place with a big pool (hopefully no gators lol). They’ll try the beach as well, but there’s no way they’ll stay there if it’s filled with frolicking nearly nude people with butt cheeks all over the place.

After a 6 week review we are officially cancelling 83% of the programs at USAID.
The 5200 contracts that are now cancelled spent tens of billions of dollars in ways that did not serve, (and in some cases even harmed), the core national interests of the United States.
In consultation with Congress, we intend for the remaining 18% of programs we are keeping (approximately 1000) to now be administered more effectively under the State Department.
Thank you to DOGE and our hardworking staff who worked very long hours to achieve this overdue and historic reform.

I hope I’m just being paranoid, but this is the first time I have been unable to get on X. It is the morning after Canada has it’s first unelected globalist at the helm, and he wanted to shut down X in Canada. Sadly, I need to get onto X to find out what’s going on!
