…and take a moment to check out Shawn Lane. End of discussion.
Yep, thats incredible.
EVH was a great “flash” player, but he tended to do the same thing over and over. 40 years on, the Van Halen material does not hold up well....everybody looks at it as goofy, party rock. That band did alot of cover songs, and their originals were so so...just my opinion.
Minority opinion for Doc Watson . . . .
Brian Patrick Carroll. Aka Buckethead
i always thought the few hits he had were very average and the solo’s, a beginner could play...his “live” extended “solos” were just alot of feedback and distortion, at times just a bunch of noise. I guess for that time, it was ground breaking etc, but even he stopped playing that style after a few years and went back to a very blues style playing. Not saying he wasn’t great and innovative for HIS TIME, but the greatest ever?, not even close. Guitar playing became so much further advanced, especially after the 1970’s..
Rick Rubin, very successful producer, doesnt play ANY instrument....he just knows what hes looking for.
Dee, Diary, Revelation, are a couple of hints. He played a little blues too. Here he is at 15 years old. Just messing around...

He got his start as a teacher in his Mom’s music school.
