Hurricane Milton supercharges into monster 180mph storm so quickly experts call for it to be given unprecedented Category 6 status: 'This is nothing short of astronomical'

With Hurricane Milton hitting winds of up to 180 miles per hour and at such a high speed, scientists are wondering if the storm defies the five category system and should go up to a Category 6.

Florida’s Gulf Coast braced on Tuesday for the impact of Hurricane Milton’s near-record winds and expected massive storm surge, which could bring destruction to areas already reeling from Helene’s devastation 12 days ago and still recovering from Ian’s wrath two years ago.

Almost the entirety of Florida’s west coast was under a hurricane warning early on Tuesday as the Category 5 storm and its 165mph winds crept toward the state at 9mph, sucking energy from the Gulf of Mexico’s warm water.

The strongest Atlantic hurricane on record is 1980’s Allen, which reached wind speeds of 190 mph as it moved through the Caribbean and Gulf before striking Texas and Mexico.

The storm, which CNN called 'the strongest on Earth in 2024,' was described by an Orlando meteorologist as 'nothing short of astronomical.'

'I am at a loss for words to meteorlogically describe you the storms small eye and intensity,' Noah Bergen said.

Eh, we’re not going to agree on how to proceed.

If the poster at the link you provide can’t back up his claims with a hypothesis that is testable and reproducible, then that’s not a scientific process.

I’m not advancing a scientific hypothesis, he is - I’m asking where’s his.

Good luck.

That wind map is awesome. Hypnotic almost.

This wind map shows why the plants and trees in the front of my central Florida house, which faces northeast, are blowing hard while the trees in the back that face southwest are not. Since Milton is coming from the southwest, I expected the opposite, but that’s not how it works in a hurricane. Thanks for this visualization.

Looks like landfall of the eye has moved north closer to Tampa Bay. Whoosh.

is this hurricane falling apart? I’m near Orlando so I know we won’t get the brunt of it but it (thankfully) appears to be fizzling.....no? yes?

What I was trying to illustrate to you is that not all knowledge comes from the scientific process.

It’s a critical point, not only in the interest of understanding the nature of knowledge, but also to escape the decades-old propaganda that knowledge only comes from the “evidence base.”

Fair enough -how can we relate that back to the link you provided re: weather modification?

I think that this is the live thread and hardly any activity might be an indication. I'm watching CNN as everyone else the story is either Republicans this or Democrats that, and CNN is pretty much just the storm without that aspect. Kind of like the old CNN.

Guess we'll know by morning, but to me, I'm not seeing anything like was advertised as far as historic, a magnitude above, etc. This happens about every 10 years, they declare everyone who stays behind will die and then the one's that left wonder why they didn't stick it out. The crying wolf kind of thing. Maybe a lot of it is because Florida has a population who moves there from where hurricanes aren't a thing.

Hope you fare well; I hear a lot of rain in Orlando is expected.

seeing it pretty much the same as you. yes, getting a fairly decent amount of rain here now. I live on a lake and the water level is about 2 feet BELOW the bottom of the dock. IOW, all is well and doesn’t look like yard/house will be flooding. Getting short lived wind gusts too but that’s about it for now.

Right now it looks like my spring vacation to Anna Maria Island may be cancelled. Seriously though, prayers and best wishes for all those under threat from this storm. I hope it turns out to be a nothingburger.

Hurricanes are never *nothingburgers* to the people who are hit by them.

The snotty, condescending attitude some people have towards destructive weather than doesn't have an impact on them is disgusting.

I just followed this conversation back and looked at the link on geoengineering.

I could feel my IQ drop listening to some of it from brain cell death.

Dear Lord, this makes Q seem like written in stone fact.

Some people have no idea what causes the formation and steering of tropical storms.

Sadly, though, this contrail kind of thinking gets legs because of idiots like Gates who say they want to put nanoparticles in the atmosphere to combat climate change, even though they have NO IDEA what effect something like that would have on the weather.

Actually have been through Floyd and Sandy both of which caused billions of dollars in damage to my immediate area and Floyd flooded my home. So spare me the “it doesn’t affect me” BS. Perhaps you missed my point which was a sincere wish that those in the hurricane zone would be ok.

It didn’t come across as *sincere*. Your use of the term *nothingburger* shows an elitist, condescending attitude towards those who are concerned about it or who are affected by it.

Storms that cause property damage and loss of life are never *nothing*.

I am sorry you are so sensitive but nothingburger implies that an event is nowhere near as bad as was originally thought. It doesn’t mean “nothing” at all happens. I have been through hurricane damage and considered my 1 foot of first floor flooding to be nothing compared to a total loss of homes a half mile away from me. My damage was annnoying and expensive but not anywhere near as bad as it could have been. Now hop back on your sanctimonious high horse and have a great day.

The main point here is that our knowledge and understanding of the world—particularly with regard to our every day experiences and tasks, but also with regard to matters of science—come not from any formalized scientific method but rather from common sense, which is a combination of normal experience and intuition.

Think of it this way.

We need to find the pieces of the puzzle and put them together ourselves.

If we wait to accept the results of a formalized, establishment-funded study, it’s as if we’re passively allowing them to do the puzzle for us. The problem there is they lie, cheat and distort. It’s the same as believing fake news.
