I'd never known the name of this very familiar tune, I'd guess it has more than one anyway.

Transcript · Intro 0:01 · June the 2nd 2015 two men travel around 90 mil from their homes in South Wales 0:07 · to a small Hamlet called I just north of Leominster in Herefordshire what they're 0:12 · about to do would land them a jail sentence of 18 0:15 · years now the area here is shrouded in history most notably for today's story 0:25 · it was once part of Mercia one of the four Anglo-Saxon Kingdom 0:33 · George Powell a warehouse operative in his early 30s and layton Davies a dozen years 0:38 · older knew this and today they were detecting on the curiously named King's Hall Hill it didn't 0:46 · take long before the beep of the metal detector raised the eyebrows of the men and began to dig 0:52 · now if you detected before even for a short period you'll know the odds are against you 0:58 · can marvelous what we yeah like Fosters, but today would be different really different in 1:06 · fact it would change the lives of Powell and Davis and countless others around them 1:11 · forever here we go we got something it's possibly a silver coin I'm Ellie Verekia · The Find 1:23 · aka Miss detectorist online and I'm a landscape artist and a detectorist 1:30 · Powell and Davies didn't need long before they realized they had a horde on their hands a gold 1:35 · arm bracelet a crystal pendant banded with rot gold a gold ring and 3in silver Ingot 1:41 · and hundreds and hundreds of silver coins Powell and Davis knew their history they were seasoned 1:46 · metal detectorist and they knew what they should do but they didn't they dug over 3 foot deep and 1:52 · retrieved a horde taking pictures as they did The Horde would likely have been buried here by 1:57 · a viking Raider in the 860 or 870s to retrieve at a later date now just two months after this dig 2:06 · well some of these items started to appear on the open market now Gareth Williams who is curator of 2:11 · the Viking and early medieval coins at the British museum well he was alerted to the sale of some of 2:17 · these items and straight away he knew this would be from Undeclared treasure and one of the biggest 2:22 · giveaways was one of the coins was what was known as the two Emperor coin and prior to this point 2:28 · only two are known to exist that means that this would be worth at least £100,000 so when we say 2:36 · Undeclared treasure what exactly do we mean the law the Law's very clear about fines um under the 2:43 · treasures act we have to report any fines that we believe to be treasure or that are of historical 2:49 · significance which um does leave a little bit of room for interpretation but you have to report 2:54 · those to your local find leas and officer and they're all listed on the end n CMD website 3:01 · something really important like a hoarde the most important thing is not to actually try to excavate 3:06 · it yourself but to contact the finds the Laison officer who would then send a team out to check 3:11 · whether it needs to be professionally excavated by archaeologists CU obviously if you go in there 3:16 · with your spade and TR you can disturb important information about how the those objects were 3:21 · left for Powell and Davis this would be another mistake it would be relatively easy for West · The Market Place 3:29 · mercia police to track them down four men were charged Powell and Davis with stealing 3:34 · and concealing and two others with conspiracy to conceal but there was still a problem right come 3:42 · this way come this way cuz I something to show you right so we thought that the southeast slope here 3:47 · might be of of worth um alongside the Roman Road what more can you ask for the only significance we 3:54 · have found is this thing over here which I shall show you but not show you at the same time you'll 3:58 · see what I mean I'm remember a comedy sketch that said um the other day that uh when you were a kid 4:04 · in the ' 80s and '90s you could always rely on a pornographic magazine in the Hedge lo and behold 4:10 · we found about six um pornographic magazines in the Hedge by 2019 only some of the jewelry 4:17 · and 31 coins had been recovered even that was valued at £ 581,000 the police noted though 4:25 · that on the phones of powell and Davies there were hundreds of coins still intact and freshly 4:30 · dug from the three-foot hole estimations as to the value of the entire horde had now reached £3 4:36 · million and here is the problem let's start with King Alfred the Great ruler of Wessex and let's 4:45 · also consider Ceolwulf the last king of Mercia well this too Emperor coin had both their names 4:52 · on it it showed there was a political alliance between Alfred and Ceolwulf II this changed the 4:58 · way we saw Mercier and their relationship with the Vikings and of course Wessex who 5:03 · they shared the coin with so where did the rest of the coins go May 2023 and Roger pilling and 5:10 · Craig best are sentenced to around 5 years in jail each on metal detecting charges best and 5:15 · pilling had hoped to make hundreds of thousands of pounds by selling some 9th century coins well 5:21 · that all sounds familiar is because it probably is we're probably talking about the same hoard from 5:26 · back over in herfordshire, Best claimed complete ignorance they said they acquired them from John 5:33 · down south at a metal detecting rally the police caught them by setting up a fake meeting to buy 5:39 · the coins with best and when the police did this they noted that two of the coins were actually 5:44 · missing said to be valued around about £85,000 so what exactly is a rally I'm still quite new 5:51 · to this I've only been involved with the metal detecting Community for just under 2 years I've 5:55 · been to a number of what are called day digs which are run by private companies or organizations who 6:02 · will organize permission with a land owner and then um lots of detective will descend on the 6:06 · same piece of land for a day and explore and make finds um so I don't go to day digs that regularly 6:13 · but I do attend digs with a club a local club and I like that because I've got to know the people 6:18 · there and they are so generous in sharing their knowledge so I learn a lot from them about objects 6:24 · and about technique with my machine so that's been a great way to experience um group digs · What did we find? 6:32 · filing pool filming 6:33 · it everyone from Miss detectorist Miss detectorist that's it she's helping us 6:41 · do a film today on metal detecting beautiful day everyone beautiful day so we spent a day 6:46 · and a half now in a field walking with Ellie from M detectorist now we've had permission 6:50 · to be here and we're aware of the context of the landscape and what we may find and we're 6:55 · really quite excited so I bought the detector and it's just I haven't really look back I've 7:00 · I've got completely addicted to it it's it's it's an absolutely wonderful way to spend your 7:05 · time it's a great way to connect with where you live in a different way I'm meeting loads 7:09 · of great new people interesting new people and learning more about history which I never really 7:14 · connected with at school the more I spend time with Ellie the more I'm compelled to help piece 7:20 · all this together thousands of years of History beneath our feet will we be able to find something 7:25 · and contribute to society's understanding of maybe even a little bit of history and it's got 7:33 · a kind of is it like a bro or something yeah it's potentially could be a broo get back to yeah it's 7:40 · it's pretty though if you look at the edge it's almost scalloped isn't it oh brilliant and none 7:45 · of this sounds like the story that we started with all this sounds like is actually quite a 7:50 · fun hobby and one way you feel like you might be able to contribute to history change something 7:55 · give value to the community it sounds like a really wholesome thing to be doing if you do it 8:00 · responsibly she got all excited I am 8:08 · actually if it's possibly a silver coin oh it's very beautifully bright isn't it and you know 8:19 · it feels almost too bright or I don't know what I'm looking for honestly but I I think 8:22 · we found I think we found a coin on iPhone and I'm sure on other phones as well there's 8:30 · a tool called magnifier okay what you can do is you can scroll in on it like this oh yeah 8:37 · wow and yes I can see now that it is a coin I mean you can see that it's silver because of 8:42 · the coloring it's so bright and shiny isn't it yeah so a coin a coin yay tell you what 8:49 · it's not often you find a silver coin so that is actually really nice thing to find so here 8:53 · in Northwest Hampshire and we have a single coin and it turned out to be Louis the 14th 8:59 · flue de Le silver coin absolutely no context whatsoever now Ellie has go on to see how 9:05 · this may relate to the landscape and any specific body looking for this particular 9:10 · subject so let's step back to the poeell and Davis case because their case isn't isolated · Context 9:19 · the news seems to be littered with cases just like that especially in the last 10 years or 9:24 · so people out at night metal detecting digging holes um and from a safety perspective we've 9:31 · actually been out shooting at night and had them in fields where we are which really isn't a good 9:36 · thing minimum trespass potentially Criminal Trespass then there's potentially criminal 9:41 · damage if they're doing damage to crops that are in situ um and then there's potentially 9:46 · the theft of taking stuff that they have no right to power and Davies did a number 9:51 · of things wrong clearly the theft in the first case but arguably more importantly for that the 9:56 · history and the context they completely removed it and context really is everything as Dr Tess 10:02 · mackling recently wrote in an article that I'll link below context is not just artifacts but 10:07 · literally the context in which they are found context includes a relationship between the 10:12 · artifacts and their surroundings their location and deposits they came from it also includes the 10:17 · position of the artifacts and the material in relation to other archaeology on the site the 10:23 · more I learn about this community the more I learn about the people the YouTube videos the 10:28 · rallies well the more more I learn that it does feel like a responsible and sensible community 10:33 · and the more I learn about it it feels like Davis and power really aren't part of it hearing about 10:38 · night Hawking just makes my blood boil I know the rest of the detecting Community feel the 10:43 · same we don't want to be put in the same bucket with those types of people you know they're out 10:49 · with the sole aim of stealing and they're using a metal detector as a tool to steal 10:54 · from someone's private land whereas a detectorist is using a metal detector as a tool to establish 11:00 · layers of History to bring understanding to a land owner about the place where they 11:05 · live now it turns out the local fins officer who already tried to get in touch with Powell and · Irony 11:12 · Davis Davis was very well known to these offices because he'd already handed in hundreds of other 11:17 · items over the PRI years now these offices sometimes do give uh flexibility in terms of 11:24 · time because they understand people's reluctance to hand over these fines that they found but the 11:28 · biggest AR of all of this is poell and Davies had permission to be on the land where they 11:34 · found these coins there was a technicality as to whether this was given to them by the 11:38 · person that rented the land or owned the land but either way to all intents and purposes they 11:43 · were on the right track had they actually follow procedure at this point when they found one or 11:48 · two of these items and reported it straight away they may well have walked away with over half a 11:53 · million the last couple of days has been a really positive experience and I think um 12:02 · for me metal detecting is one that can offer so much to the people doing it a sense of community 12:08 · a sense of understanding of the landscape and the history everything is so tangible and I think it's 12:13 · one that can also benefit the archaeological Community too overall if it's done well so I 12:20 · guess the question is how do we make sure it is done well well I think that answer comes in two 12:25 · fold number one a small license similar to that of when you fly a drone you have to take an online 12:31 · test every couple of years and that teaches you the basic responsibilities the understanding of 12:37 · the landscape and the context and everything about what you're doing how to do it what to do it and 12:43 · how you should go about it and that would stop certainly the small time uh Keen mess detectorist 12:49 · on day one from going out and digging a great hole in the land not really knowing what they're doing 12:55 · that wouldn't stop Davis and power of course well the second part of that is this license really 13:01 · should contain something which makes people aware of the potential that if they don't do things by 13:07 · the book well you're going to end up in jail for a very long time and with that in mind those coins 13:12 · from the Davis and power well a lot of them still haven't been found so perhaps in a thousand years 13:17 · time another horde will be found with very little context or understanding Big thanks to Ellie 13:23 · for help in making this video uh you can go and subscribe to her Channel Wherever I put the link 13:28 · up there perhaps perhaps and uh yeah go and click on Miss detect we'll see you this time next week

She used to appear at the Shakespeare festival in Stratford Ontario, but it wasn't generally billed in advance. We went to, hmm, probably "Much Ado..." and were well up front, and our reaction and that of the rest of the audience when -- surprise! -- she came out was amazing. Electrifying. And those plays are 400 years old. Plus, they're filled with clichés. /rimshot
