YouTube has saved me some real money. I fixed our gas dryer yesterday when we were ready to buy a new one.
My Grandfather, who died when I was five was an appliance repairman. I must have inherited some of that.
When we first got married, we needed a washer and dryer but had no money. I found a gas dryer at a garage sale. They said it squeaked. I think I paid $50 and they threw in the washer that leaked.
$2.50 later the dryer was fixed. The washer was a lot bigger job. That cost $19 and a couple hours of my time. The washer lasted about 8 years. We got 10-12 out of the dryer. All pre-youtube.
That’s why I’m embarrassed about the stove ignitor

I have 15+ year old car. The battery croaked after 5 years or so. The replacement battery was $350 at the dealer. I got ripped off but can't complain too much since the battery has lasted 10 years.
Having a battery last 5 years is amazing! They were good for 5 years back in the 70’s. You are lucky to get three years out of today’s batteries.
The battery that croaked after 5 years was an Optima battery. The replacement was an Optima battery. The car sat for months on a dealer lot before I bought it. The salesman had to jump start it before I test drove it..
I have a similar story, but not about a car. It was a pellet smoker someone left on the curb for the garbage man. I asked the homeowner what they though the problem was, and she told me, “We don’t know. My husband is not a tinker, so if you want it, take it.” I did. I spent $30 or $40 dollars on a new auger motor and had myself a practically new Pit Boss 820. I use it several time per month!
Isn’t that incredible! “My husband isn’t a tinkerer.” Sure paid off for you.
Maybe 15 years ago, I was at our large hardware store called “Orchard Supply Hardware” (before the big boxes drove then out of business). They had a complete patio furniture set of table, six chairs, umbrella, lounger and cushions selling for $200. The table top was made of square tiles, about 10” x 10” that just dropped into a grid opening. One of the tiles was missing so nobody had purchased the set.
I bought it and was going to use a generic similar tile, but called the manufacturer. They said “We’ll send you a replacement tile for free”!! I got the tile, dropped it in place and had a brand new patio set. It’s still in use out back today.
Yep. I love hearing stuff like that.
