Indeed! Every golden retriever or lab pack I’ve ever encountered tried to lick me to death. Some even try to jump up and you have to say “down” and “whosshagoodboy?”
Just like humans, some breeds are more dangerous than others.
I still don’t see a father in the story and have to wonder why you surmised there was one.
“”Every golden retriever - tried to lick me to death.””
Absolutely - they are splendid animals. My husband and I had Dobermans and I never thought another breed could take their place. Never had a “Golden” but our daughter and family took one in during a horrific storm in December several years ago. No one claimed it and it turned out to have heart worms that our daughter and husband had treated. It was assumed that someone dropped it off because of that and knew the expense of treating such which in itself, I understand to be quite risky. He lived a good life and ended up with cancer probably 5 years later. A more lovable animal I have never seen. When we went to our daughter’s house, Cooper would lay on my husband’s feet as if by doing so, he would never be able to get up and leave...My husband wasn’t well and perhaps the dog sensed it?
The veterinarian who took care of Cooper raised Goldens and was partial to Cooper. When Cooper had to be put to sleep, he came to their house to put him to sleep; my grandson stayed home from school and neighbors gathered to say goodbye to Cooper.
I’m alone now having lost my husband and would love to have a Golden but I’m not able to care for any dog and as far as security, a Golden wouldn’t be much help - as you say... It would be at the door welcoming in a host of strangers.
Lovely animal.

It must have been the photographs that clued me in...
