My favorite is, I Can’t Stop Loving You by Count Basie, the last big band song to chart.

Crummy list. It seems to be one man’s opinion based on one man’s opinion.

Gee, no mention of “Help!” or Nowhere Man.

Both far superior to any other listed Beatles song.

THREE Beatles songs make the list? Right.

(…just kidding. I’m in with “A Day in the Life” — and one of my personal favorite cuts on Sgt. Peppers is…

”She’s Leaving Home” )

Isn’t EVERY list like this someone’s opinion?

Agree. Bunch of songs I don't even know, followed by a bunch of songs that I know and don't like.

A few good ones in the mix here and there. "Good Vibrations" is a good choice.

Reminds me of the American Film Institutes list of 100 funniest movies. For some reason they really like men dressing up as women. (Tootsie, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Some like it hot, all made the cut.)

Way before my time, though I heard a lot of it in the nursery. First tune that comes to mind, upon seeing the post title, is “Telstar.” It actually had lyrics, when it was called “Magic Star,” but not in the same league as the instrumental.

It would not be my top 100 list, but it is worthwhile looking at to remind you of good songs not at the top of your head.

#99 Ring of Fire

This paean to the grisly aftermath of an unforgiving curry – or tribute to love’s steamy embrace, whatever you fancy – was written by Johnny Cash’s future wife June Carter with Merle Kilgore, and originally recorded by June’s sister Anita. Cash boosted it with the mariachi horns that give it its overriding, buoyant character.

ah the English and their humour

More or less, but usually there is some thread running through. Musicianship, if the song introduced something new, even sheer popularity. But the Hollies "Bus Stop", which is a delightful little ditty, does not belong 20 notches above Del Shannon's "Runaway" (Max Crook's Musitron was not a standard Clavoline, but very heavily modified in a custom manner), which was a MUCH bigger hit, musically very interesting, was straight rock 'n' roll in the era of Percy Faith, and performed by a new and great talent.

Lots of good choices there, but no In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. Just goes to show, you can't please everyone. ;-)

I suspect the compiler is a few years old than me. I’m 65.

The 1960s was an era of “mom & pop” radio stations. There were many pathways to success.
