There is a website called (or was called) Blastmapper. You can dial in your location and any size nuclear warhead, even how high above the ground the detonation is. There are several 1000 each side has BTW.

I wondered what life would be like if just 2-3 per state got through to the largest cities. The effects are difficult for me to visualize but I think I came close:

No power grid—everyone’s CPAP machines go off, insulin and antibiotics starts going bad etc
No or little fuel distribution—fuel gone or so rare no one can drive to work, most all business close, no money, economy grinds to a halt

Massive casualties and radiation sickness —all hospitals are flooded , your sister is having her baby in some nice safe town? wait till she goes to the local hospital and sees the place is flooded by transfers

Etc etc

Amazes me the nonchalance so many here have about the prospect.

Oh and on Biden, he is a senile old man. Actually it was worse, I thought Biden said climate change was the only existing existential threat we had.

Ohh here is that site: https://nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap/

“There is a website called (or was called) Blastmapper. You can dial in your location and any size nuclear warhead...”

I had an old boss that used to help with targeting of our nukes against the Soviets. He looked at the aerial/satellite images. The locations would vary a bit over time, with some obvious permanent strike zones.

We were at a large science conference around 1996. Lots of Russians there. Whenever they would say where they were from he would mention his old job and how he had targeted their city. He said it in a light-hearted conversational way. I think the Russians took it that way as they were all very friendly. To me it was amazing how the threat of nuclear war wasn’t always hanging over our heads anymore.

Well, until perhaps now again. Obviously we aren’t anywhere near that now - but one mishap in Ukraine...

Crazy how otherwise good humans can blithely joke/make light about mass murdering millions of children by burning and radiating them alive. I think it’s a bit like discussing astronomical distances, the mind can use numbers but can’t really conceptualize what they stand for. And that’s the real danger of a nuclear war. Guys get trained and study their use for decades, they get desensitized and can’t fathom the result or even push the idea out of their mind by rationalizing it’s someone else’s responsibility. And then of course there is always the possibility of mistakes or getting guys like this in command: IMG-9698
