“Surprise attack” by wild animals? Is there any other kind? I find it hard to believe that anyone would “expect” an attack by grizzlies, unless you’re suicidal.

Yes, there is.

A surprise attack would be the animal crashing through the underbrush without any prior warning or noise.

As opposed to seeing the animal in the open 25 yards or so away from, then it start running toward you.
