pitiful that I didn’t even know they played there.
Love me some Sly and the Fam.
I read somewhere that the band was known to skip the odd recording sessions so that Sly played a lot of the parts himself.
I was just CCing you since you were on the original reply.
I think that was Lester Chambers, who it seems barely saw any royalties from his one big hit.
The only bad thing I heard about Sly was that he was busted for having a piece in a nightclub in Ft. Myers, FL (iirc). Or some such.
Nice find.
A shame that two greats -—the other was Buddy Miles-—were never able to combine incredible talent and creativity with normal life and dependability for recording commitments.
I saw the live shows of the Buddy Miles Express (an ensemble of brass and rock guitar similar to Sly) and they were mesmerizing. Had to explain to others who he was until finally Jimi Hendrix had him join the Band of Gypsies and made it easier. Miles was in prison twice and had serious kidney and heart trouble later. While he was nearly dying Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood played “Them Changes” at Carnegie Hall on their album as a tribute and Buddy listened from his bed. In prison he actually got a band together of cons who were good musicians. The famous serious of songs and TV ads for the California Raisins were the result with songs he wrote and played with that group.
Like asking Jack Kerouac to be a good conventional father to his neglected daughter Jan and a good husband at the same time as an unconventional writer, reluctant media star and symbol of rebellion from rules.

*That’s a ridiculous contentions. Black people?*
Fine. I’ll say it anyway.
Also, Sly was the producer for the hits of the Beau Brummels. Sort of underappreciated pop group from the Bay area. Several great A/B sides on the Autumn label.
It’s ok.
I like this one better:

I thought you were talking about this, another homeless-once-famous muso.
A rough life, a rough business, and didn't homelessness spike off the charts beginning with Obama? Ironic.
Larry Grahramn.. is that the guy who sang “one in a million you”
Graham
Yes, that’s him. He was also in Graham Central Station. He invented the slapping technique. Second best bassist in popular music.
