This 8088-based kit running DOS 2.1 was a game-changer for me back in 1986.

That is a great graphic presentation of the PC desktop operating systems history. Thanks.

I started with GCOS and WMMCCS back in 1976. Then onto Cyber 265 in 1979, IBM OS/360 in 1982 and DEC PDP Ultrix & RXS Macro in 1984.

Try pucking on OS and watch the market share % change over time.

It was interesting watching how long it took the Mac OS systems to move above the 5% or less of market share. Yet even today it is only about 15%.

CP/M was significantly better than DOS. If Gary Kildall had not been such a dick and signed the non-compete with IBM, Gates would have faded into the dustbin of history and nobody ever would have heard of “Microsoft”.

About 6 years ago, I went into a FedEx/Kinko’s store, and just inside the door, there was Steve Wozniak on his mobile phone. He was talking about Apple IIc progamming.

Sounded like somebody was working up a new OS for the computer.

I just found a sealed copy of XP pro the other day. Wonder if authentication still works.

I have XP and Office 2003. If I ever reconfigure my PCs, I plan on trying to load both of them to see if I can get them to work. Before W7 and Office 2010 came along, those two were the best.

“I have XP and Office 2003.”

I have Windows 7 and Office 2003. When we move, that Office 2003 program goes with me in my carry-on, along with my jewelry and recipes. The introduction of “the ribbon” ruined MS Office Suite.

Hubby has that abominable Office 365. It’s a hot mess.

I also have an XP laptop, but it won’t connect to the wifi. It finds the wifi, but simply will not connect.

“Windows 7 is still my favorite OS.”

It’s the best! It’s on all of my systems. (You can buy new Windows 7 and XP from NIXSYS in their Legacy line, BTW.)

Around 2010 I had Vista on a laptop and didn’t like it much — until I got one with Window 10. Then I loved Vista.

I remember once, when I reprogrammed the computer I have that will support XP and 2003, that I got XP to load, but I couldn't get 2003 to authenticate. I think that are probably ways to do it, but since I haven't had the need I haven't pursued it. But when I finally do a shuffle of my equipment, I'm going to give it a try and see if I can make it work.

I'm with you, I hate the ribbon, and there is an add-on I once used to restore the old menu. That ruined it for me as well. I use 2010 mostly now, which of course has the ribbon, but I put up with it.

I remember that. I had hoped that CP/M would have become the premiere O/S. One of my military supervisors even had a personal computer that could boot both CP/M and MS-DOS. She preferred CP/M.
