I watched a Rick Beato interview with Michael McDonald and you can hear a lot of early Steely Dan history there.
One of my pals likes jazz and he sees that influence in their music. Like most bands their music evolved over time. I like most of their work, it’s never boring.

LOL GOOD!
Wisely to have done so to escape the absolute disco mindless and early rave pogo-music. Jerry, of course made the quite famous Pizza tapes album with Tony Rice in the 80’s.
that’s funny...I was in a mostly alcoholic stupor by then...hence the left handed reference to Jerry.
I really wasn’t a Dead Head.
music-wise...I’m still stuck in the doowop 50s and the doowop reprise in the 60s, motown and Sinatra.
Rode my bicycle around our neighborhood with a transistor radio tied to the handle bars cranking top 40 tunes in the 60s. I turned 10 in late 1969.
They had the big hit in '69. But I like Laura Nyro's version from two-and-a-half years earlier better.
The Sunset Strip curfew protests were big news at the time. But believe it or not, I thought “For What It’s Worth” was about Mao Tse-tung’s Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution that was going on in Red China. I was hoping at the time that it would lead to the overthrow of the Maoist regime.
Compare any pop song today with the 1960’s.
Today has no variety, the instruments are basic and the singers are mush mouth or whiny sounding.
“Superstar” written in 1969 by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell.
This group below is amazing. The instrumentals are perfect, better then the Carpenters. I watch the video just to see how they make the amazing sounds. The singer is not as good as Karen Carpenter as she does not have the clear vocals as her.
Kinda whiny. Still she is 100% better then Taylor Swift and most others today.
BTW they are Russkies : )
