Austin must have been a crap general if he did not realize what he was doing to the chain of command?
I had a “what to do if I am not here” policy when I was a supervisor in a small company. I cannot fathom why the leader of the largest military in the history of the world would not have such a document.
I am sitting here wondering what the “real” story is...because the one they are feeding us smells of chicken feces.

After he’s healed up haul his ass in front of a committe, he’s got a lot of ‘splainin’ to do.
Not that it will matter but do it anyway because it should be done.
The Secretary of Defense travels with and is surrounded by DOD security and communicaitons staff 24/7. Him going by ambulance from his home to Walter Reed in Bethesda had to involve not only the ambulance but several Suburbans with lights flashing. His security is not Secret Service but instead elite DOD people out of the CID world, I believe. In any event, he travels a bit like a pharaoh. Not only shifts of security and other aides but also a bunch of people at Walter Reed had to know he was there. This was no unintentional oversight; it had to result from his express instructions. He went so far as to hold conference calls from the hospital, including it seems the ICU. He had to be on painkillers and very likely at some point was sedated.
I don’t believe the cover story for a moment. Something else is happening and God only knows who is really in charge.
I am a Bama fan and never thought I would totally approve of a coach from Auburn.
