When I was in high school, I came to the conclusion that the school librarian wouldn’t last 5 minutes working in a public library, where the patrons wouldn’t put up with her surly attitude and would complain to management

You're probably right. A surly attitude wouldn't get you very far at most reference desks. When you're a reference librarian, you have to deal with all sorts of people, including women who believe they are royalty.

While I have had moments with sustomer service, I try to be nice to them because I know that they have to deal with a lot of people who are like me at me worst (or worse!).

Right up until covid, everything was pretty normal. But since the day I was looking for covid tests just before a holiday and was thanked for being nice about the store’s being nice, my attitude is unusual enough that customer service people not infrequently respond with surprise and or gratitude.

These poor people: maybe there is a reason young people don’t like keeping their jobs!

I’ve always found the librarians at public libraries to be quite friendly and helpful.

When a kid throws it’s food toss a glass if ice water in it’s face lesson learned.

Squirt guns around the house is right handy too another don’t do that lesson.
