The question is strictly academic, now that we have Our Blessed Lady—alternately referred to as “The New Ark of the Covenant” (namesake of Newark, NJ and Newark, De, the two city names being pronounced differently by the way!) and “The Ark of the New Covenant”.
Those Templars/pirates/Aztecs/whomever who dug that pit managed to defeat all modern attempts, by using only some block and tackle and the limb of an oak tree. Geniuses. /s

Earthquakes occur in the area from time to time and the ark could have been in a cave or other structure that collapsed during an earthquake.

I believe Ron Wyatt’s account and video where they report EXACTLY where the Ark WAS FOUND.
It was placed in a grotto (crypt) directly underneath where Jesus was crucified....
So that when the earthquake struck, and the ground split open,
Jesus Blood ran straight down to it and was deposited on the mercy seat... right where it needed to be.
They know right where the Ark is right now, and they left it there until they need it.
Subtle and beautiful one of the greatest scenes in the history of cinema.
