When it comes to descent like that, it’s tricky. Ever heard of the Scotch-Irish? All Irish MacDonalds/McDonalds come from the Scottish clan, who moved to Ulster initially.

And in the Gaelic language (both Irish and Scottish forms), there is no abbreviation. Everything reads as “Mac”, as in “Mac Dhòmhnaill” (Scottish form; Irish form uses an acute accent over the “o”).

Ha! Like a true Freeper, you apparently keep debating and subtly changing the subject after having been shown to be incorrect!

How have I been “shown to be incorrect”? With all due respect, I merely filled in gaps in your information, so your present assertion is, frankly, of a trolling nature.

As for “true Freeper”, are you conversely stating that you are a “fake Freeper” who plucked up courage to post after the nine years you mention in your handle? Have a nice day, if so.

McDonalds from Ireland have been in the US since the 17th century (though not the McDonalds restaurant family, at least directly).

And no, you’ve not been filling in gaps you imagine in my knowledge.

Have a good day.

I just picked up some Countryside Creamery Pure Irish Butter yesterday. Product of Ireland made from the milk of grass fed cattle. Good stuff.

Yes; descended from the Scottish McDonalds, aka Scotch-Irish. If they were Irish from centuries before the Scottish migrations, we would have the O’Donnell’s restaurant franchises. 😏 Take care . . .

I use the Aldi brand too. Usually more than a dollar cheaper than Kerrygold.

When I think of an Irish dinner, I think of this:

Just don’t ever eat a McDonald’s hamburger with a bowl of Campbell’s soup.

why you have both “McDonald” and “Donaldson” in use in the British Isles.

It is not common, but I have seen the name "Fitzdonald" which shows Norman French influence.
