I think a doctor once said that to a relative of mine about Naproxen/Naprosyn. And it did work quite well for them with no high.
Yeah it was awful- My doc was shocked when i said i stopped the steroids- he asked if i tapered, i said “No- was i supposed to?” I was on it kinda long term due to a condition- i was feeling better and wanted to be off them and took it upon myself to stop instead of doing the right thing and asking doc —
I’ve only ever had a headache like that one other time when i was out in sun all day- long drive home head started to hurt- and by time i got home, it was so bad i threw up from it then too-
If i ever have to take prednisone again- I will go strictly by the book on tapering
not sure if gabapentin is the same as lyrica, but lyrica causes suicidal thoughts in folks-
“Why does Lyrica cause anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts?”
https://www.drugs.com/answers/lyrica-anxiety-depression-suicidal-thoughts-589845.html
I was on lyrica for awhile when they thought i had fibromyalgia- (Which i always doubted that i had due to no trigger points- supposed to have 11 or so in order to be diagnosed?)- they didn’t explain about the suicidal symptoms of it either- I got off if as it wasn’t touching the muscle pain i have- and it was expensive to boot-
Doctors sometimes hand out tapering instructions when they first prescribe Prednisone but for the patient it would be easy enough to forget or to not understand the risk of quitting cold turkey. Pharmacies ought to include a large red warning on the steroid pill bottles.
I experienced migraine level headaches once, when I was a boy, while tapering off of cortisone. Brutal headaches. As an adult when I rushed a Prednisone taper I didn’t have a headache, but my blood pressure dropped dramatically, I lost coordination and balance and muscle strength. I’m not certain if you can actually manage to kill yourself but it wouldn’t surprise me.

my doc’s eyes got wide when i said i stopped them all at once, he said “Don’t ever do that again”, then explained why- he seemed pretty alarmed- I just know i won’t do that again- not knowingly anyways- that was awful- as you know-
Some of the sudden withdrawal effects are probably on the dangerous side, a rapid BP drop being one of them. But my kidney doc seemed more amused than alarmed when I called her asking what the hell was going on. I’m now so familiar with it she lets me set my own tapering schedule, although I hope to never have to deal with it again. It’s a tough med.
Lyrica is generic now and the cost of the generic is far lower than the name brand. Thats the only reason I can even afford to switch now.
Long ago I had tried Lyrica and had nightmares taking it. Doctor at that time switched me to Gabapentin and Tramadol to help manage the pain. Tramadol was quickly kicked to the curb since it made my heart flutter and skip beats.
I’m on my last day of taking 2 800mg Gabapentin instead of 3. Tomorrow I switch to 2 Gabapentin and 1 Lyrica during the day for three days. Then 1 Gabapentin and 2 Lyrica for three days and finally 3 Lyrica a day and no Gabapentin.
Anyone who wants to follow my progress, ping me in freepmail.
I hope it works for you. Didn’t reallY touch my muscle pain/weakness, so I gOt off it. I have the symptoms of fibromyalgia, but none of the trigger points, and none of the tender points of chronic fatigue, so not sure what is going on.
“I think the poster actually meant 101, and just had a typo.”
Which is why the beginning of my reply stated clearly:
“I know what you meant, but...”
“Pain killers are good for taking the edge off.”
After a shattered wrist and a detached quad tendon at the knee cap, believe me, I know. The wrist was alot more painful.
I came to the conclusion that if your doctor prescribes opioids to get you through your first couple of weeks of physical therapy, it’s a bad break.
Cheers!
I was unaware lyrica was used for fibromyalgia and thought it was used primarily for nerve pain/diabetic nerve pain.
My nerve pain comes from 4 major lower back surgeries which resulted in nerve root damage, as I understand it that’s a fairly common occurrence.
My pain management doctor is confident switching to Lyrica will give me some relief, I’m just hoping I don’t have the horrible experience of the nightmares I used to have while taking it. They were bad enough they used to wake me up.
Hope you find something that works for you! Chronic pain is the worst, it impacts every aspect of our daily lives and people who don’t have chronic pain like we do really don’t understand what it takes for us sometimes just to make it through the day without losing our sh*t because of it.
Some years ago, I was hospitalized with a MRSA infection and my bp was so low that they told me they could not give me narcotics for the pain. MRSA is exceedingly painful, FWIW.
So I was relegated to ice packs, which actually worked very well. Ice packs for pain are very underrated. It’s a great alternative for those who don’t like or can’t take pain meds.
thanks- Yeah it’s no fun- they put me on chantix once and wow, it gave violent nightmares- over and over- hopefully you dont’ get nightmares with the lyrica again-
but what works, works....
Oops.
Most who were on the oxy ones were Forced Tapered. I use Valium and a schedule 5 for Neuropathy, seizures, Vertigo, and Fibromyalgia, not really enough for 20 mg. My spine is totally degenerative, with calcified lumbar. I won’t let them touch it, most back surgeries fail. Hands tingle, go numb, and legs don’t work well. Especially hips.

Agree most back surgeries fail, probably why I'm in the position I am. And I had a VERY good neurosurgeon who worked primarily on baseball, football and basketball players at the pro level here in the Chicagoland area.
Sometimes you can have the best Neurosurgeon and Orthopaedic surgeons working on you and for whatever reason, your own physiology fails. That's what happened in my case.
First surgery successful, second successful, I messed up my back doing something stupid and third and fourth surgeries I didn't fully recover from.
I have to go to Memphis, so surgeon choices are guesswork. Physio is out, they’ve done more damage than a surgeon. Took me nearly 5 yrs to rehab my dominant Right hand from thumb surgery. The wrong cast damaged the wrist nerves.
Have you tried Dry Cupping for pain? It’s an older method but helps.
