When I was 10 years old my dad gave me a portable 8-track player and two tapes: Three Dog Night and Steppenwolf.

By the mid-70s Three Dog Night was the third biggest Billboard act of the '70s according to Casey Kasem, behind the Carpenters and Jackson 5, but ahead of Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney & Wings, Elton John, and Jim Croce. They had a slew of Top 10, and several #1s.

Then only a few years later, they were back playing small clubs in New Haven, etc.

Hoyt was cool. Got to hang out with Townes for a bit and he had nothing but good things to say. Billy Joe not so much, he was drinking and did not like anybody.

I bought their last Top 40 record on 45, "The Show Must Go On". Some of their songs have not aged well, "Joy to the World" and "Black and White" were the P.C. tunes of their era, but have a "We Are the World" cringiness today, and no longer meets the present standards of wokeness. I am playing "Brickyard Blues" now that I am thinking of them. I remember Casey Kasem telling a story of how they got the reverb on one of their records (Sure As I am Sitting here?), and they actually ran a cabled mic to the men's room to get the sound they wanted. That kind of creativity no longer exists, computers took the fun out of it.
