Her and Chubby Checker were living proof that this is(was) not a racist country.
Great song, and I look like a dork trying to do the dance.
I remember that and when the Twist was banned at high school dances. I remember the scandal when LBJ had a party at the White House and they were dancing the (gasp)TWIST!
Also it seemed a new dance craze was coming out ever few weeks for the next 8 years.
Yes, of course. I am more than happy to accommodate your request. Here you go...
Not my cup of tea at all.
My German great grandmother urged us to get up and dance with Chubby Checker (on TV) in her living room. Never knew the Twist was anything more than an innocent dance.
(Do the) Mashed Potatoes--Nat Kendricks & the Swans (1960)
James Brown & the Flames recording under a pseudonym
Gravy (For My Mashed Potatoes)--Dee Dee Sharp (1962)
Hot Pastrami--The Dartells (1963)
Sloppy Joe--Jo Ann Campbell (1962)
Dear Lady Twist--Gary U. S. Bonds (1962)
Well now, the doctors agree, so I've been told,
Do the Twist and you'll never grow old.
I won the twist contest in 5th grade.
Oh...thought this was gonna be another Joe Biden thread.
I thought everybody was doing the brand new dance called the locomotion?
It would be appropriate for an Evelle Younger thread. Younger, who was California's Attorney General, ran for governor in 1978, hoping to unseat Jerry Brown. His conservative opponent, LA police chief Ed Davis complained that Younger was "as exciting as a mashed potato sandwich." Nonetheless, Younger won the primary--he apparently won GOP voters over with his boast that he had never lost an election.
A RINO who agreed with Brown on most issues, Younger went on to lose his first--and last--election when he was blown out by Brown, and he was never heard from again.
But Jerry had Linda Ronstadt. That had to be worth a few votes!
I love it when folks pull little tidbits like yours outta the past. Thanks!
