I remember in high school reading a book about WWI. In it there was a chapter about the financing of the war. While my focus was on the battles, I do remember that the Kaiser made a statement that he knew that the war was over when the Swiss bankers stopped extending credit. I cannot remember the book name or author, and it did not penetrate my teenage brain the significance of the comment, so I cannot even look it up (though I have tried).
