To: technically right

IIRC one of the players was looking for his fatther who was at the game.

You are right…I don’t recognize this country anymore…we have been slowly invaded.

I have really good memories of that time. It was the year I graduated high school. I was living in Revere at the time, right next to Winthrop where Mike Eruzione lived. So I was able to go to Mike's victory parade. The song "99" by Toto was a big hit at the time and so that song always reminds me of the hockey team.

The day of the U.S. victory against Russia was I believe on a Friday afternoon. The network was to show the game in prime time that night on tape-delay. However, there were so many Boston area players that word got around before the game was shown on TV. I remember getting a phone call around 5pm that night from someone who heard from someone who heard from somebody who was actually at the game in Lake Placid that the USA beat Russia.

Remember, this was way before the Internet and so there was no way for most people to know the outcome of the game until it was shown on the TV or unless they were told on the telephone. I believe one radio station in Boston let it slip but otherwise, they kept a pretty good lid on it.

My college roommate was from Winthrop and played on a summer softball team with him. I met him once. Nice guy. Amazingly regular guy.

North of the border, 8 years earlier a similar but also very different moment. Canada stood still and the moment in a hostile arena in a hostile country happened. No one who lived through it will ever forget. The image below is seared into hockey fans minds in Canada since that day.

I’ll never forget watching that my college dorm floor in the common area.
I didn’t know much about hockey, but it was pretty clear how amazing the scene was that I was watching

Still my favorite moment involving a Soviet Hockey team....

When the Red Army Team played the Flyers in Philadelphia, and the Soviets left the ice because the Flyers were being too rough, the crowd started chanting, "They're Going Home! They're Going Home!"

Watched the Russia game in a 12 x 12 dorm lobby with 20 guys crammed on a sofa, 2 chairs and on the floor.

When we won the place went nuts.

Unfortunately somebody already told me the score before they showed the game, remember it was not shown live. And I even noticed that Jim McKay couldn’t contain himself.
