They’re not Lefty plants, believe me.

Some are Democrats in Conservative clothes.

They understood then the Republicans were pushing abolition. Too bad the Confederacy amen corner can't see it now, 150+ years after slavery was abolished.

They had a public face and a private face. In public they said they wanted slavery abolished. This was just a lie to win them votes. The truth is that they didn't want slavery abolished at all. They simply wanted power so that they could spend the money that slavery produced.

When they had the chance to do the right thing, they all voted to approve the Corwin Amendment, and *THIS* is how we know they were lying all along about their opposition to slavery.

They just wanted power and they lied to get it.

Not this nonsense again. The Corbomite Maneuver was passed by the previous Congress and signed by the previous Democrat president, on who is considered one of the biggest presidential failures in presidential history. He and many who voted for the bill were out of work the following year.

The Corbomite Maneuver was never ratified, and even if it was it wouldn't have given the slave holding states anything they didn't already have, because it required a Constitutional amendment to abolish slavery anyway.

It was nothing but a last ditch attempt to prevent secession and the CW, that failed.

It was valid before, it's still valid now.

and even if it was it wouldn't have given the slave holding states anything they didn't already have,

Exactly. The only thing it did was to demonstrate Republicans would support slavery if they thought it was in their best interest to do so, and with 73% of the Federal budget paid for by slavery, it was certainly essential to all their big spending dreams to keep that money stream coming in.

Except the majority of Republicans in Congress voted AGAINST it and only five states ratified it.

How did you make 2 separate posts to 2 different threads within 3 seconds of each other?

Right click on post reply, then post as normal. I did it for both so I could go over my replies before posting them, then sent them together.

I don't believe that. Do you have supporting evidence that shows the remaining majority after the Southern states left, was Democrats?

Both Thomas Corwin (House) and William Seward (Senate) were Republicans. These were the chief architects of the Corwin Amendment.

Corwin Amendment

At this time, many were trying to PREVENT secession and a civil war.
