When I was in 5th grade, while living at the Air Force Academy, I took my father's Charleville musket to school for show and tell. I walked to school dragging it behind me as it was longer than I was tall then.

Imagine doing that today and having to face the local SWAT team.

This is true, but here in michiganstan, we do have the power to recall politicians.
If the community is truly pissed off, they can fire the prosecutor. Sometimes just the mention of this in the editorial column of the local newspaper will do the job.

Back in the late 50’s we lived on Long Island, NY.

My older Brother would take his .22 Rifle to High School two times a week because he was in the Gun Club. He walked to School carrying the Rifle over his Shoulder.

It wasn’t even in a Case or a Sleeve. Nobody gave him a second look.

Went to a small rural school and almost every truck had a gun rack and we were even allowed to bring them into the school and keep them in our unlocked locker. That was in case we went with someone else hunting after school, we didn’t have to walk all the way back to our vehicle. They admin knew where most of the people were on the first day of deer, pheasant, turkey, goose, duck or any other season for that matter. Can’t remember any shooting in any school.
