I think that he meant to say that the USSR *WAS* closed off to the free world. They didn’t have hundreds of thousands or millions of students in our universities, etc., because we didn’t let them do that. At best, they could infiltrate a few hundred or thousand agents, and we were constantly looking for them.
With Chynah, we have welcomed them with open arms and they’ve clearly bribed and/or blackmailed hundreds of high-level government officials. The fox is inside the chicken coop, and no one seems to care.
Russia’s economy is a dumpster fire. It always has been.
China on the other hand comes bearing the gift of a billion potential customers. Our corporations are so hot to push their earnings up next year they sell out. Our government, bought and paid for through corner offices across the country is only happy to accommodate that commerce.
