My recollection is, but I can’t remember where I read this, he sailed to Borneo or some such place, still very young, and worked in a plantation, where he may have raped a woman, traded slaves, killed a man, anything’s possible in the jungle. He surely stole a lady’s diamonds. I think he was permanently barred from Australia. Exceptionally charming but no saint.
