2.5 million years ago....aight, kkthx for that bit of unimportant information. Science ftw, as par.
Will they make us all wear a mask and social distance because of this?????
Any idea of the source?
I missed it. But then, I can sleep through my alarm clock beeping.
I thought I felt a disturbance in The Force
The photos are really amazing.
I wondered why the dishes in the cupboard were rattling.
But accelerator mass spectrometry is so sensitive that it even allows us to calculate from our measurements that the star that exploded must have had around 11 to 25 times the size of the sun, Korschinek added.
It was too far away to cause a mass extinction, but it likely did shower the Earth with cosmic rays. That likely affected the climate.
However, this can lead to increased cloud formation, says co-author Dr. Thomas Faestermann. Perhaps there is a link to the Pleistocene epoch, the period of the Ice Ages, which began 2.6 million years ago.
So while it may not have been ultra-calamitous for Earth, it did have an effect.
Some researchers think that the supernova explosion at that time did trigger at least a partial extinction, called the Pliocene marine megafauna extinction. They point to not only the presence of elevated levels of 60Fe, but also to a feature out in space called the Local Bubble. Its a gigantic, cavernous hole in the interstellar medium caused by one or more supernovae explosions. Now, the discovery of 53Mn just strengthens that hypothesis.
The Megalodon, a bus-sized shark and one of the largest predators to have ever lived (the) supernova explosion may have caused its extinction, along with other megafauna, during the Pliocene marine megafauna extinction.

But no specific stellar location is mentioned in the article
I was pissed no Kodachrome!
Seems to me we at least owe the supernova a thank you letter...
I read the article. I was looking for coordinates.
There are plenty of supernova remnants that have been mapped...guess this one hasn’t.
“Now, a new study presents additional evidence of a supernova explosion near Earth 2.5 million years ago”
I remember that one. The Democrats immediately proposed a green energy bill and higher taxes.
They blamed excessive energy use on earth for the catastrophe.
(the) supernova explosion may have caused its extinction
Seems to me we at least owe the supernova a thank you letter...

Nah it was over fishing - the regulations in those days were pretty lenient ...
“Numerous catastrophes have imperiled the planet, from massive impacts, to volcanic conflagrations, to frigid episodes of snowball Earth.”
SNOWBALL EARTH!!!???
Wait! What!!!
The earth has not always been the same perfect ideal average temperature it is now!!??
But..but...but...
Hmmm... Lately, I've been assuming that 53MN was code for the 53,000 Somalians resettled or anchor-babied in MN each year between 2008 and 2020...
