My father was an old family practice doctor in a small town and was still making house calls back in the day. Dad had seen a lot of things in his decades of practice, but I vividly remember one Sunday afternoon when he came back from a house call looking distraught. The patient he had seen that afternoon had a particularly bad case of shingles and Dad said he had given the man all of the Demerol ( a potent opioid for severe pain) he safely could and it hardly took the edge off his pain. The man was in agony and there was nothing Dad could do for him.

I wish you well with managing your shingles. There are more treatment options these days. However, when a shingles vaccine was first available remembering that experience with my Dad, I did not hesitate to get it and have now gotten the newer vaccine which gives much higher protection.

Had a mild case years ago and it was awful; my sympathies.

Two tips from recent years, if you get a shingles vaccine going forward (I don’t know if actually having shingles gives you immunity):

1) If your insurance doesn’t pay for a vaccine, shop around. I was able to save 30% off the substantial cost of the shot; and

2) There are two main shingles vaccines on the market. One is made with aborted fetal cells and the other one isn’t, so look into that if you get inoculated.
