Most of us in the west have grown to the belief that the prison time is the punishment, and physical brutality is unnecessary and just brutality, not justice. Yes, Singapore has its own laws and its right to them. While we can defend that right, we don’t have to defend the law. We can and should say what we think of it. I think the canning is wrong and unnecessary.
I would prefer to see Singapore deport, for life, foreigners caught for breaking its drug laws.
Places like China and Iran are very tough on drugs - yet still have significant drug problems. If harsh measures are working for Singapore, they're the exception to the rule.
Back in the ‘80s I worked in Kuwait and talked to some Brits who did a stint in Saudi Arabia. They caught one foreigner making wine for himself and sentenced him to 100 lashes.
The hooker was he got 25 a week, so just when he was healing, the cuts were opened up again.
