You've got the key: name recognition. Trump's name recognition in 2016 was only one point below Hillary's.
Of course his many sterling qualifications to be president shortly became known, but name recognition comes first.
As a high school friend of mine used to say, "The public is pubic." They have basically no idea of who's who and what's what outside of the most cartoonish simplification.
