I’ve been to the Naples Museum — it is awesome! The first time I went, I was with two other women, all of us in our 20s. The leering guard showed us a few of the detachable erect male members that could be fitted into a hole in the groin area of the bronze wrestler and warrior statues, for private viewing. We giggled.
I’m really laughing as I collect the Giuseppe Arcimboldo. He’d do the seasons with the fruit faces, then he’d do them again and they’d be ALMOST identical. If he was selling those, he must have had a sketch he kept to do such identical work. What that man wouldn’t have given for good photographic equipment and printing presses!
And two of his paintings are meant to be turned upside and still be fully composed paintings. THIS is the Renaissance! With a sense of humor!
His sketch pads are magnificent. Some in full color and detail. The problem you run into is that so many paintings copy him and you’ve got that whole “School of” and “attributed to” thing going.
Many of the ancients seem to have had delusions of grandeur!
About their members? LOLs!
Lovely as always!
