South Florida has all the ingredients for a wildfire on this thing:

—Lots of tourists (spring break) bring the virus from all over the country
—Poorly prepared hospitals
—State late to begin social distancing
—No masks

North Carolina is either the ninth or tenth most populous state in the country, vying back and forth with Georgia at around 10.5 million people at present. And yet, NC only has six deaths. What gives, underreporting or something being done right?

Im thinking it could be several things, or all of these combined:

We had at least 3 superspreader events, a
1 church cluster that is responsible for most of North Georgia and 1 funeral cluster that was responsible for most of the South Georgia cases.

Also, it is possible this is a different strain, there are a lot of young people with severe illness in GA.

Third, it could be related to high levels of diabetes and obesity, which is a problem in GA. I don’t know how it is in NC.

Why do you think Detroit is more of a hot-spot than Chicago or Houston? Seems this is not strictly based on population.

This video discusses one of our superspreader areas. This is a pretty rural area, but has one highest fatality rates per capita in the world.

Interesting article I came across. This Rheumatologist has been studying cytokine storms for a few years now.

“ Probably the sickest patient I ever saw come out of the ICU unscathed.” The doctors treated her with anakinra, a cytokine-targeting therapy that was approved to treat the autoimmune disease rheumatoid arthritis. “She turned around and it was magical,” Cron recalled. “We’re both research scientists, so he developed a mouse model [of cytokine storm syndrome] and I’ve been studying the genetic and human aspects. We’ve identified new genes not previously described as a part of this genetic workup.”

In 2016, Cron and Winn Chatham, M.D., professor in the Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology, began a clinical trial at UAB and Children’s Hospital to study the safety of anakinra in patients with signs of severe, potentially life-threatening inflammation. Cron is director of the Division of Pediatric Rheumatology at Children’s of Alabama. Anakinra is “remarkably safe,” and following this initial study, the researchers hope to begin a larger trial in the future.”

Adm. Giroir, Assistant Secretary for Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), is now on FNC and stating he doesn’t want to answer the question about masks. What a weenie. Not a leader. Stand up, man, and tell us the truth.

Interesting article on Russia:

https://www.pri.org/stories/2020-03-23/russia-underreporting-coronavirus-cases-russian-doctor-says

Anastasia Vasilyeva, the head of Russia’s Doctors Alliance, has been relentless in her criticism of the government’s coronavirus response, accusing it of lying. Now she’s been summoned for questioning by the Investigative Committee.

Ana was the source for the first article, and Vlad is not pleased....

Interesting tidbit from the first article—at least as of March 23, the Moscow subways were still running...

This is interesting, from a CT news outlet. CT doesn’t do anything independently:

“As of Monday evening, people aged 80 or older represented only 6% of confirmed cases in the state but 64% of deaths. People aged 70 or older represented about 15% of confirmed cases but 83% of deaths.

The state has stopped sharing hospitalization numbers broken down by age after switching to a new dataset, but figures released over the weekend showed that a majority of hospitalized patients were 60 or older.”

The Fairfield County hospitals are in triage mode right now, and that tends to lead to higher deaths among the most elderly...

What I found interesting is that they will no longer report their deaths by age. Somehow changing “datasets” is going to remove that info from what they release to the public.

I got my little maltepoo shaved in early March. The main reason I went was because her nails were so long and that can cause health issues. I’m so glad I went when I did.

I think they don’t want anyone looking too closely at the triage process.

If the over 80 year old death percentage gets much higher than other states, that kinda gives away the little secret.....

The U.K. said yesterday that the death numbers were going to jump. Apparently, they were only reporting hospital deaths, but starting today they are reporting all deaths from cv.

I think I might be able to go over to Tractor Supply and get a 9-way for Max there, and then administer it myself.

I’m still not too keen on going to Tractor either though, but it’s got to be done.
