I like to point this out because often I hear from people that they "don't have time" to make breakfast in the morning and that is the excuse they give for having cold cereal (bad!) or a fast-food breakfast sandwich (even more bad!). I call BS on that. I commute to Manhattan and get up at 4:30am but I have plenty of time to make a healthy breakfast for myself at home.
Your diet mimics mine. I had been thin my entire life until around 62 and then all my eating habits caught up with me. Prior, I used to eat the normal food pyramid food. Whole grains, lean meats, plenty of leafy veggies, brocolloi, fish and did not worry about the cookies. I worked out and was an avid hiker of these Southern California mountains. Then type 2 diabetes type issues began to happen, hypoglycemia with the episodes of very low blood sugar, full skin burning rashes, migraines, detached retinas in both eyes, prostate issues and then TURP surgery, Constant constipation with hemmorids. Heck I was eating organic fruit just about every 2 hours, convinced I needed the fiber.
My daughter and her husband were having success with paleo eating ( a little less restrictive than keto). I honestly thought the guy was a food nazi and I was irritated by what I felt was a controlling viewpoint on this. However he was controlling in any other way.
I gave straight keto a try, following doctors like Ken Berry MD. Hes not selling pills, vitamins or package food like the non keto docs such as Gundry. I lost 40lbs in 3 months. Ate as much meat, eggs, cheese, fermented food like sourkraut, avocados as I wanted. Took all seed oils out of my diet. All bread, all pasta (except for cassava pasta). Im paleo now and I do break my diet about time a month. Ive had pizza twice in the last year and loved it with no ill effects.
Not as much wine as the old days. You get drunk too easily eating like this.
Weight has not returned. I went down 2 pant sizes. All my old shirts fit. Im 158 to 161 up and down between that. Thats my high school wight. Im male and 67.
Life is good and I dont plan on going back to my old eating habits. Still working as an analyst.

Like I say, I’m not the greatest at the specifics of Keto, but I do think it’s important that people know what the Keto experts recommend, and they are quite clear with regard to protein being something like 20-25% of calories.
It’s all so silly. Just eat what you want and stop at 1,700 cal/day and walk a few miles a day to speed up weight loss. You can eat what you want just not as MUCH as you want. That is the rick.

True, for many. But for the other 70% of the country, that doesn’t seem to be working (unless we’re to believe they enjoy being overweight).
I’m actually thinking about switching it up.

There are experts and then there are experts. A week from tomorrow, I will have been at this for six years and have vetted a lot of them over the course of this journey. I still have plenty to learn, but the butter chuggers discussing percentages are not the best path to follow IME.

See dr Robert Lustig videos on sugar and processed food. Its not just a simple matter of burning more calories than you take in. Otherwise, why not get your calories from Coca Cola? He and many others have debunked that myth. And of course those of us that go to the gym, know plenty of folks who burn massive amounts of calories , but never seem to loose weight.
Sugar and alcohol are toxins. They wreak havoc on your entire body, especially your pancreas and brain.

I'm down 40lbs in 6 months. And ALL my biomedical ratios have improved. BP pills cut in half. Cholesterol down, A1c down, Kidney (urine) test down. No more acid reflux.
It’s all thermodynamics. You are nothing but a big bag of hot water ( you are 70% water ) with thermostat set at 98.6 Deg. F. Figure it out. Calories are the fuel. It doesn’t matter what the calories are, carbs, protein or fat.
Great, it works and we arent sending some processed food company like Nutrisystem any dollars.

So, I guess, people did that up to about 60 years ago, when this high-carb fad diet started...and then they stopped (thereby causing obesity to go through the roof)? Obviously there’s more at play here.
Nothing personal, but the argument kind of reminds me of how Big Education (led by teachers’ unions) keeps throwing back the blame of worse and worse student performance on parents going on strike and not wanting their kids to learn. All the while completely holding themselves BLAMELESS for the horrific curriculums they now use (such as Whole Language reading through 3rd grade, in lieu of phonics...and calculators in lieu of memorization for math).
Anyway, don’t get me wrong - I do enjoy the debate!
It is true. The only nourishment you get comes thru your mouth. I know exactly how much I weigh, how much I ate yesterday and the calorie deficit I had yesterday ( -300 calories. It was only a so so day because I shoot for -500 calorie deficit per day. ). Can you say that?

Gary Taubes’ “Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It” makes an interesting argument. Don’t know if I agree. He argues we “Eat more / Move less” BECAUSE our body’s hormone’s are trying to get us to gain weight, and that if we can do things to get our hormones (primarily insulin, although estrogen plays a big role for women) under control, then our bodies will DRIVE us to “Eat less. Move more.”
Speaking only for myself, IF with a keto-ish style has resulted in my eating a lot fewer calories each day WHILE FEELING FINE. That is where the keto-ish approach has helped. When I tried low-fat diets, I suffered from massive headaches any time I got hungry. When I switched from thinking “Fat is BAD” to “Fat is GOOD”, I could reduce my intake significantly with no headaches or weakness.
This is where I differ from strict keto. I don’t think low carb/high fat (not high protein!) means we can then keep a high calorie count. IOW, calories play a role, but so do our hormones. Get the hormones going in the right direction and your body will follow.
2,000 + 500 - 1,700 = 800 calorie/day deficit. At 800 cal/day deficit you should lose 1 pound every 3 or 4 days or 8-10 pounds a month. And it works like that perfectly.
