At one point I had his quote about remembering that the country was at war, as my screen saver at work.

Oddly the Dauntless was superior to the plane that was supposed to replace it, the Curtiss Helldiver. It’s not supposed to happen that way.

The Avengers were just getting to Pear Harbor as the Battle of Midway was about to be fought. There’s a good book called “Dawn Like Thunder” that talks about them arriving to late to get in the battle. It’s a shame, some of our torpedo crews might have lived through the battle.

The Avenger entered U.S. service in 1942, and first saw action during the Battle of Midway. Despite the loss of five of the six Avengers on its combat debut, it survived in service to become one of the outstanding torpedo bombers of World War II. Greatly modified after the war, it remained in use until the 1960s.

A fully loaded Avenger weighed 18,000 pounds.
A fully loaded Dauntless weighed 10,000 pounds.

Here is a History Channel video, 'Long Odds.' It is from the series 'Dogfights.' The first segment is about 1 Dauntless fighting off many Zeros. The video shows what a Dauntless is capable of in the hands of a brilliant pilot.

If you are talking about the Dauntless they are relatively small.Remember these planes had no folding wings and had to be stowed below decks on early carriers.Wildcats(equally small) and Avengers had folding wings.

I was fascinated that some of Torpedo 8 (VT8) flew as part of the Cactus air squadron at Guadalcanal. History is truely harder to believe than fiction.

The SBD was the size of a fighter of that era, with a larger wing area. It had the same basic engine as the F2A: Wright R-1820 Cyclone nine-cylinder radial.

The Douglas SBD Dauntless had offensive armament and was quite maneuverable.

It was somewhat like the later Douglas A-4 Skyhawk: a small single-engine bomber that could dogfight.

So in this Midway, Chuck Heston doesn’t have the annoying son?

Excellent movie, but that superfluous sub-plot was VERY annoying.
