“No, it’s a weakness or compulsion.”

Perhaps at one time. When it’s a choice, it’s a choice. When it’s no longer a choice, it’s an addiction.

Look up “addiction,” it’s the loss of choice, that’s a fact Not “my” fact; THE fact. Your not accepting that fact doesn’t change it as a fact.

Perhaps you could plug your ears and yell. That should help prevent you learning facts that impune your ignorant self-righteousness, in your safe space on that high horse, in judgement of all the sinners. You and God, best buddies, partners in judgement.

I’ll bet you’re a lot of fun at parties.

Addiction is a choice.

A lot less than you think. Most addicts would die to become sober. Many do die.
Never met an addict that is glad they have an addiction.

Oxycontin was a miracle drug for me when i was in the hospital a few months ago after open heart surgery ... however, within just a couple of weeks after coming home, as the pain abated, I STILL had a desire to take the drug even though I know longer really needed it ... I knew exactly what was happening and immediately stopped ... I had about 24 hours worth of withdrawal symptoms, which would have been much worse if I had kept on taking the drug ... Oxycontin is a miracle drug, but a VERY dangerous one ...

“Most clients are never told/warned of the danger of addiction related to their meds”

to me, that’s the real problem ... Oxy is a VERY useful drug for post-operative pain, but VERY dangerous ... way too easy to addict ... I’ve never yet had a doc explain to me how easy it is to addict to Oxy and how careful one needs to be to take the drug for only X number of days and no more ...

“and I stop the second my mind says “well, I’m not in pain now but I’m gonna be so I’ll take one for later. “ done.”

really, that’s the only way to avoid heading down the addiction path, and that’s exactly how I do it too ...

but the problem is that 99.999% of people given these powerful pain killers are never told how additive they are by those who prescribe them and what to watch out for, and even if they were told are not smart enough or cognizant enough of their own body’s behavior or have enough control of themselves to avoid addiction ...

It definitely works. But when medical professionals are stabbing you with shots of morphine, you can definitely get addicted without knowing. That should not happen here in the USA, though.

Addiction is a choice.

Ever been addicted or work with folks who are/have been?

“Most addicts would die to become sober”

They elected to use and continue to use.

When a person sticks a needle is his arm, or swallows a fistful of pills, they are not being forced, they are making a choice.

If that is not the case, and addicts have no control of their actions, then they should be institutionalized along with others who are incapable of controlling their actions.

Stay in your lane big blue. I hope you are older. If you are young it is going to be a long hard road of ignorance.
If you truly want to learn about life then attend an open AA or NA meeting.
I am serious about this.

“But when medical professionals are stabbing you with shots of morphine, you can definitely get addicted without knowing.”

it’s always been my personal experience that as long as the opioid administration was commiserate with my pain levels, I felt no urge to addict, but if they continued beyond the need for REAL pain control, then that’s where the addiction could start IF the opioids were not discontinued ... and it didn’t matter whether it was morphine, Demerol, Oxycontin, or Dilaudid ... and i’m talking pain from real trauma, not just muscle strain type pain ...
