That is if you are legal.

Stealing an airplane, one would just ignore ground control, tower, etc. and move on. The tower would shut the airport down for the protection of any inbounds.

The real story here is that if he had managed to start the engines, he would have self destructed on takeoff. Probably run off the far end of the runway at 150 knots or so.

By the way, I have 10,000 hours in light twins, retired from the business that required flying and would be totally unable to fire up a jet engine.

He is a total fool.

scary... but stealing an aircraft is also something that should not be done unless you are looking for a home... in prison...

these are not going to be his only charges...

THe charges mentioned are just the ones the police happened to think of.

There are many federal FAA-level aviation felonies committed. Hijacking an aircraft comes to mind, although unusual in this case with nobody aboard. There is also the issue of tampering with an aircraft.

The closest thing to an aeronautical engineer yet.

Pass the Purple Drank.

Surely you can’t be serious.
...and don't call me Shirley.

I'm a pilot (SEL) and wouldn't try to fly a jet!

Remember your first in flight IFR clearance, under the hood, in a complex plane, while in a hold pattern, on a hot bumpy afternoon, and an empty stomach.

For me it was never the plane, but following procedure @220KTS and not blowing right thru full deflection on the CDI reporting a mandatory intersection.

The first fly the plane rule was never difficult for me. But I was really blessed with good training. Flight Safety, in Vero Beach.

By gum, get this kid a working plane that no one wants and
let him fly it out of an airfield in the middle of nowhere!

LOL

It is that easy. When you get out to the runway you just push the shift lever to “fly”, press on the gas pedal, and when you get going really fast you pull back on the steering wheel. Once airborne just follow the interstate to wherever you want to go. Find a long flat place to land, put the shift lever into “land” and push the steering wheel forward to go down. Not much to it, lol.

At least he’s not walking into walls while checking his latest Facebook feed? I think you are right. Get the kid in the left seat of a 172 with an instructor. Let him get that avgas smell in his senses. It may be formative towards a future.

I know a 1500 hour pilot with a real bad habit of landing his P-Baron on taxi ways at several large airports. He has also landed at the wrong airport several times.

Yep. A doctor.

Under the hood was always harder for me than the real thing. The hood made it harder to scan and I hated it.

I would rather fly real weather all day than under the hood for an hour. If I were still flying.

I quit almost 20 years ago.

I doubt that it is as much fun now as it was then, nor as easy. I suspect that most of the centers have become more like New York used to be.

You’re probably right but I wasn’t thinking anything so noble by the suggestion.
