To me, everyone has missed the point, not even one that the author was making. It is a great article that not only illuminates the harm of government, but illustrates why younger people can’t connect the notion of government to the problems in their personal lives. I have 2— 40 plus educated professional daughters both dealing with issues that at first glance seem to be personal in nature—job dissatisfaction and rebellious teens. They don’t have the slightest notion that they are dealing with the residuals of a permissive society and the discouragement of personal initiative...and get angry when I try to point that out.

The writer blames all of this on Progressives. It is the fault of the FERAL Government pure and simple. A government that is run by the non elected organizations setup by a bunch of lazy ass politicians

I’ve been saying for some time that most, if not all, forms of licensure constitute a legalized bribery scheme.

You get a diploma from a medical school, guess what. You’re a Doctor. State license boards be damned.

Same with law school.

As far as auto mechanics and barbers are concerned, either you can or you can’t. Got a bad haircut? Wait for it to grow out and go to someone else next time. I’ve cut my own damned hair and got away with it, mostly because I *wanted* to buzz it to the scalp for reasons. That time.

As for opening a business, retail or service? Shouldn’t have to do anything but rent or buy a storefront and do it. Some protective regulations involved with the hiring of employees, but that shouldn’t be burdensome. In fact, if you can literally get someone to work for peanuts because that’s all they want, good for you.

And don’t get me started on paying bribes to state officials to get permission slips to keep and bear arms. That should NEVER have existed in this country after 1791, and ought to be set on fire and the ashes plowed into the earth.

Rant over.

This time.

Oh man, does this ever ring true with me.
Had a stable job of 22 years in 2007 and decided it was time to take a career path risk in 2008, well that did not end up panning out well.

Then came Obama, I was hired back by the very good former employer with all benefit reinstated contingent on an improving economy but then was laid off in 2009 because Obama tanked the economy.

The last 10years have been very hard. I had many different jobs trying to stay off unemployement and actually ended up using it all up.
Now, I am somewhat disabled and caring for a family member to protect future assets that will happen in the near future..

I see a lot of jobs advertised and cannot take one at the moment even with Trump pumping up the economy.
This causes some depression to say the least. Hell no, I am not going on disability. I am 55, I should be running my own repair shop.

I work in engineering producing ‘construction’ drawings to obtain city permits for construction. The International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) dictates construction ‘standards’ for all new construction throughout the continental US and also applies to remodels of existing buildings. The standards that this code forces adherence to imposes extraordinary costs that are all but exclusionary for small business start-ups.

Intentional? Damn right it is! Inspired by and to the benefit of the industrial complex. The codes get more constrictive and costly with every code update.

I know that govt can be a stumbling block to some types of start up businesses, but there are also start up businesses that require very little govt intervention. I’ve been in the restaurant business, retail, and high tech, and never had a problem with licensing and start-up costs related to govt. Just take a few business courses if you need to, learn how to do your own taxes, and go for it.

The are both Democrats and Republicans in the political/regulator class, and they love to regulate against potential competition. They also like social and legal policies that break families to prevent them from rising as business competition.

During the 1970s, a boss of mine said that competition is healthy for businesses and good for competition. Businessmen like him are gone and have been replaced with what we see today.

Meanwhile Jose just fixes cars on the front lawn of his rent house while his wife Rosita cuts hair in the kitchen. And they don’t ask anybody about no stinking permits, licenses or inspections they deal strickly in cash and don’t collect any sales taxes for the city, county or state. They undercut the gringo’s prices and get their business. Because they are illegal the city, county, state and federals leave them alone as they are from a protected species.

Damn! Makes me want to puke, too. I was a self-employed barber for 35 years, retired in 2005. When I started out, I had to spend a required # of hours in state approved schooling, pass the state board exam (for which there was a fat fee), pay for my professional license every year, and buy some professional liability insurance. Over the years, more and more regulations cropped up, more yearly fees were extorted for the privilege of staying in business. Insurance coverage had to increase, as well as the cost of that insurance. WA State levied a business & occupations tax on our GROSS income (sorry suckers, no deductions for overhead expenses here), started requiring a license for the shop (in addition to professional licenses), and the list just goes on and on. It became crippling and spirit crushing to know that I was working so hard and not taking home any more money than I could get as a single mom with 2 kids collecting welfare. No, things are NOT OK for the average Jane and Joe out there.
