Well, anyone can see on my homepage that Im from Tennessee :-) I thought about Northern California but it is way too close to Southern California. And the Nazis in Sacramento are still in charge of it.
I hear you on bad elements moving around the country. We deliberately picked a very rural, economically depressed area quite a ways from a large city. That way it would pretty much stay the way it is. Illegals and liberals like to invade places that are growing it seems.
Youre smart, mixing money and business with friends and family is just too dangerous for the relationship. No matter how close or friendly.
did you ever get your shed rebuilt?
First aide kits!
Now thats a very important prepping topic. And I noticed most prepping topics are also good for every day life, especially when youre like me and you live far from town.
We do have some butterfly bandages in the medicine cabinet. Those are handy things. Right next to the tick remover, which I discovered we needed when we moved here :-(
Unfortunately, my first aid prepping is just a hodgepodge of items thrown together. Things I find at the store and think I could use. I havent put a whole lot of thought into it. I do have some fish anabiotics, but the last time I bought them was sometime ago, so it might be time to upgrade the stock.
If anybody has any ideas or a list of things that would be good to have, please post!
Arrowroot is not clear but it works exactly like flour or cornstarch.
I don’t know the exact measurements. I just wing it until it looks right.
I got it very cheap at a local Mennonite/Amish store.
I believe you can find it at grocery stores but it’s not very cheap there.
Oh, great idea! We have a cute little Amish store south of town that I was going to take a friend to. Ill put arrowroot on my list!
I wasnt really talking amounts, I wing that as well :-) but I mean like corn starch you need to mix in cold water But it mixes and really easily, flour you need to mix up in a roux or with a whisk Plus have to cook it for a while, I was just wondering how arrowroot works in comparison. Right now I use either cornstarch or flour, depending on the application. If I have to thicken something the last minute, I always use cornstarch.
You also use it just like that. Mix it with cold water and then bring it to a boil to thicken it. It mixes in very easily.
But you don’t have to cook it like flour to get rid of the pasty state. Soon as it comes to a boil and thickens, it’s good to go.
My mom told me about it. She saw it on Galloping Gourmet and tried it and liked it.
Sounds perfect, I hate the hassle of dealing with flour. But sometimes that clear transparency that cornstarch makes isnt appetizing. What does arrowroot create?
Do you know how it stores? I mean for long-term storage.
Sorry for all the questions rapid fired at you :-)
I loved watching the galloping gourmet. So that mustve been a long time ago? I wonder if its more of a European thing.
It sounds exciting, because I wont know exactly what I will get other than it will all taste like beef. I was telling my friend about it and he was intrigued. So I sent him that website so he could order some.
Im going to plant them at the end of the garden closest to the house, so I can see them. Then Ill plant the scarlet runner beans somewhere in the middle, his website said those dont Cross pollinate with any other types of beans. And then I got one other type from him, a Romano style one that Ive never tried. Ill put that at the end of the deer garden and everything should be far enough apart. Ill just have to hope the deer leave it alone though. We had really good luck last year planting them their own garden of corn. They ate every single kernel but left ours alone. So they might think those beans are theirs also.
Xanthan Gum works well as a gravy thickener but don’t know about using it in other applications. I bought a small package years and years ago and no need to buy more anytime soon as you only use a pinch. Literally, a pinch. Don’t know if it can be stored at room temp but I keep it in the freezer.
IMO, arrowroot is like a combination of cornstarch and flour.
It is not clear like cornstarch, it looks more like flour, but works better and tastes better.
I’ve had mine for years (the tub I bought was pretty big) and it seems to do fine. I never thought to look up storing it.
It sounds great. I’ll have to get my friend that I was going to go with to get over her cold ASAP now! LOL!
Wow, I can see myself making REALLY dense things with that, LOL!
THIS TIP FOR ALL THE LADIES who read this thread.
Ladies, when sending your significant other to the market to pick up a sack of flour which you might have forgotten in order to make that special birthday cake...or other tantalizing treat, make certain you do this!
Please relay to him the type of flour you will be needing. There have been numerous times while in the baking section of a super market when a male approaches and asks
“Sorry, but can you help me? I’ve been sent on an errand to buy flour but unable to decide on what kind she needs.”
He is asked what she might be making: cake, bread, etc. Sometimes he will know, but 1/2 the time no clue and he receives the answer ‘if not baking bread, cake, an all purpose flour should do.’
They need information in detail to arrive home after the hunt, successfully!
They try to please :-)

Unless the fellow is my dad, in which case, no matter how detailed a description you write down, he will try to riddle out what you “really meant”, and come back with something completely different because he assumes it’s better.
(Sorry, it’s been a long day of dealing with him.)
Put your teeth together, a smile on your face and no matter how challenging it might be, be happy that he is still with you dealing or not. One day, you’ll think back and the memory will be with you. May tomorrow be a brighter day for both of you.
please add me
Awesome, I always find stories of the depression fascinating.
Scary, also. We won’t be able to survive nearly as well as those folks, just because nothing is made to last these days. We can’t resole shoes, for example. Everything is made to be thrown out and bought again.
LOL, I’ve sent hubby for the store for something similar and had him completely perplexed. (I can’t remember what right now...)
it’s like him sending me to auto zone. He thinks it should be simple, yet there are 5-10 questions to be answered before the right part is found. Questions I don’t know the answers to!
