No, keto is not Atkins. Atkins can be high protein. It is critical in keto that the clear majority of your calories come from fat.

Do you actually go into ketosis with lower fat and higher protein—or are you just following a low-carb diet?

I lost 40 pounds since September eating hardly any grains. If it is a white food then DON’T EAT IT! Low carb works but you still need to watch calories your body can make fuel from protein it is just harder for it to do that.

Keto is high fat and so you actually feel much more full, with less of a call to eat frequently.

Hello and Happy New Year! People DO go into ketosis, they use urine strips to test for ketones. I don’t know if I ever have because I never checked. I know that can be a problem for T1 Diabetics and they have to read more about this.

We have been following a very low carb, higher protein, medium fat diet. Starting up again after the holidays I want to switch up a bit and lower the protein “requirements” for the plan we’ve been following, go to more Paleo than Keto.

BUT - the general principal of lower carbs whether it’s Atkins, Keto or Paleo absolutely works.

Oh, I know that—I’ve been there, with keto strips and all.

But it seems like a lot of people here are conflating keto and Paleo/low-carb.

Both can lead to weight loss, but with different body processes and resulting weight-loss speed (other than the first few days of water weight loss).

And happy New Year!

I heard a podcast briefly where a doctor did nothing but eat meat for over a year. No salad, no soup, nothing but meat.
His health war remarkably good.

Hubby finally realized he HAS to go LC after years of fighting against the idea. His numbers are bad and on insulin. We’ll see how long until he sneaks ice cream in. Asked this morning if he’d mulch the leaves when it warms up a bit so I can get a little exercise picking pecans in the yard. Pecans are the lowest net carb nuts! Of course, they take forever to shell.

My kid is diabetic. The headaches were caused by ketoacidosis. The remedy is large amounts of water. When fat is metabolized, its byproduct is ketones. Peel an orange and smell it. That’s ketone. You can buy a variant at the hardware store - methyl ethyl ketone (MEK).

Without the water, life gets a little tough.

Apologies for the sidebar but I also have epilepsy and your comment intrigued me. You used past tense - “had epilepsy for 15 years” but no longer do? Was a change in diet a key for you?

I hope your husband can adjust to the LC diet. I’m not on insulin, but I can understand how he feels not wanting to make such a big adjustment to his usual way of eating. I’ve danced around the LC elephant in the room several times, but am finally having to face the fact that what I’ve been doing ISN’T WORKING!

Thanks for that link. I saw a couple of recipes for cereal, which made me very happy! :)
