“Finn should’ve been killed at the end of Episode VII—an uninteresting character who has nothing to do.”

The sad part is, he didn’t have to be uninteresting. Han Solo (at least in the “extended universe”) was an Imperial deserter too, but he wasn’t uninteresting. The filmmakers just seem too busy trying to build up Rey the Super Jedi Girl to give him anything really interesting to do that might develop his character.

I think they should have put a couple years between this movie’s plot and the last one. They could have started the movie with Finn having been doing something else that might have given him some other motivations besides “I’m worried about Rey”. Plus Rey could have been studying with Luke for a while instead of magically learning new Jedi powers in a few days even though Luke didn’t actually bother to try and teach her much of anything.

Silly fan, grrls don’t need Jedi training. That’s just a way for the Jedi patriarchy to oppress them. Leia and Rey can just out-Jedi them using their magic vaginas.

Yeah, that’s really what I meant. The second one just couldn’t hold me. I returned it without watching the whole thing and have not been motivated to see another.

Same thing happened with hunger games. The last one is free on amazon prime and I’m not even interested.

Johnson was obviously trying to avoid an "Empire" rehash on the heels of the "ANH" rehash that "Force Awakens" was, so Luke training Rey was never going to happen. I thought angry, cynical Luke was interesting, so I'm glad they did that. I didn't like how they handled his end, though.

The sad part is, he didn’t have to be uninteresting.

No, he didn't, but his uninterestingness (look, I invented a new word!) was built in to "Force Awakens." A deserting stormtrooper was a cool idea, but then they made him....sanitation? Really? So now even his supposed combat skills as a trained killer are undercut for a dumb joke that seemed to be mostly a reference to a scene from Kevin Smith's "Clerks".

I agree with the need for more time to have passed, but, again, that was the fault of "Force Awakens" doing the cliffhanger thing that made everyone involved feel like it had to be resolved with an immediate Luke reaction scene.

Basically, JJ Abrams is a hack who can't tell a coherent story to save his life (I submit "Super 8" and "Star Trek: Into Darkness" as Exhibits A and B). He can only introduce mysteries that he doesn't know the answers to, so the resolutions are made up by other people later on and the lack of planning shows greatly (see "Lost"). The mysteries put butts in seats, but they're REALLY unfulfilling to see solved.

Hunger Games was a great example! The first one was...well, interesting!

Others...not so much.

I muscled through all but the last one. I saw it on amazon prime and thought, “Hey, I can finish it!” And then I realized I didn’t care.

I Really got suckered into a movie called “The Maze”. I was about halfway through and realized it was just the same type of movie. I finished it thinking at least the story would wrap up.

Except it didn’t. It might as well have said “to be continued” instead of “the end”. Never again (if I can help it).

Yeah, Captain Phasma didn’t even register as a villain to me. As you said, she’s in a stormtrooper uniform, so there’s nothing really identifiably female about her apart from her voice. And as “bad guys” go, she was pretty weak... like almost all of the characters in these films.

Princess Leia has a female who is a friend, perjod. I just watched it today, and there was no scene that implied any5hing else.

Captain Phasma is female.

It's still stupid. It's just stupid in different ways with different stupid people whose skin color and genitals may be different.

I think a lot of these stories are fake news.

Like the one where people were supposed to be up in arms because one of the "storm troopers" was Black.

How many people would actually be offended by that? How many people thought the storm troopers were the good guys.

this is a last gasp after lucas’ ideas were dumped wholesale. (thankfully)

Speilberg is somehow involved in the Han Solo solo movie so it is already a pc mess.

I just read this: http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/culturebox/2013/07/hollywood_and_blake_snyder_s_screenwriting_book_save_the_cat.html

Awesome!

It explains a lot. No wonder my wife and I find ourselves, more and more, drawn to “low budget” or indie films. And I see that formula even in some of those, now that you mention it.

And even romantic comedies. Must Love Dogs immediately comes to mind.

Abrams wasn’t involved in the original Star Wars. He was an 11-year old kid when it came out.
